Im trying to change out a u joint and yoke on my dad's bush hog. The joint has been on the bush hog for many years and is stuck good. It didnt have the c clips holding it in place, I guess they were lost years ago. I put the joint in a vice with a socket and tightened it as much as I could and hit it with a hammer but it won't budge. Any ideas?

socket and a BFH..hit it many many times..it will come apart. Takes time. A vise isn't going to cut it. A press would but not a vise.

What if I use a bottle jack under something heavy, do you think that would work? I've been beating it with a 4 lb hammer and it won't move.

Ok I just kept beating and beating on it and it finally came loose. But now I don't know how to proceed. I can't get either cap off and this joint is so stubby that there isn't room to move around like on a driveshaft. The cap sticking out is very tight and I can't even spin it with channel locks.

Cut the ears off of the u joint, not the yoke, with a cutoff wheel. Then just drive each cap out.

I took livetorun's advice and cut the U joint apart with an angle grinder. It took a long time to get the new joint in to the old yoke. I really dont like dealing with these joints.

Looking at the original picture it looked like the yokes were beat up pretty badly. It is important to clean up the bores on the yokes so they are straight before pressing the caps out. I like to use a dremel and a grinding stone to straighten out the bores. Makes life easier.
