Remote Reservoir Shock Question

I've been looking at shock options for my '85 4runner. I recently broke a bilstein so it's a good time to upgrade. With the budget I have i've been looking at a 2.0 remote reservoir rebuildable shock. Was not sure on a 12" or 14" length. I've been looking at fox's, radflo's, and just saw profenders. The truck is daily driven, but gets beat on a lot. Still riding on trail-gear leafs in all 4 corners. I just wanted to hear opinions on what everyone is running and their opinions on each.

I say go with fox. There may be slightly better options, but Fox IMO is the best bang for your buck plus Carolina Truggies stocks pretty much any part you could need ever for them locally. Lengh of travel will vary on every vehicle. You may be able to fit a 14" travel shock but the springs may only allow for 10" of actual movement. Then the extra length would be a waste or make you sacrifice valuable up travel. How high are your bump stops from the axle? How much droop do you have?

Well currently it has the shock hoops that came with the lift, which seem to tall for a 12" shock. This makes the shock the limiting factor when it droops, so it may only have about 3"-4" of droop. I will be pulling a leaf out of the front to get it to sit lower and improve the shackle angle in the front. I may have to end up making new shock hoops depending on how it sits.

I'd shoot for 5-6" up. But make sure your bump stops hit before the shocks bottom out. Sounds like you could get away with 14" travel shocks. In my past experience trail gear springs are a bit stiffer than others. Taking a leaf out will help some but expect to see a little more body roll until you get the new shocks in and tuned right.

Thanks a lot, i'll give Carolina Truggies a call tomorrow and see what my options are.
