Remove the Front Driveshaft

I looked around on jeepforum.com but I cannot for the life of me remove my front driveshaft.

I took off the front 4 bolts and wanted to tie the front end of the driveshaft up to see if that is whats causing my "angry sparrows" and thudding when accelerating.

If anyone has a walkthrough or if you live near the University Area and would be willing to help me that would be great. I'd like to replace my u-joints anyways to prevent any dangerous breaking of the driveshaft.

Unbolt the 4 front and rear bolts that hold the u joint and use the tire wrench to pry.

Just b careful and they will stay on. Tape them with electrical tape once u get them out. It won't matter if u replace them. If u get to the Denver area I'll change them for you.

what he said.
Once you get the 4 rear bolts out, its not gonna fall out...well not until you compress the driveshaft a little.
Hopefully there is at least a little grease in the U-joint caps to keep the needle bearings in, if a cap slides off. Try and be gently to keep the caps on. If one does slide off, needle bearings arent gonna "fly everywhere", they usually stay stuck in the cap. Once in a while a bearing will fall out of place in the cap, you'll have to reposition it back where it belongs.

thanks for the tips guys. I'll try and remove the shaft tomorrow.

If I can't remove the u-joints myself I may take GotWood up on his offer. How much would you charge me to replace both u-joints? Even if they are not bad it may be a good idea to replace anyways.

if you are down my way (lincolnton) you can stop by my house & i will help you install the new u-joints ( i will show you how so you will no how next time ) for free

If it's a TJ there's more to it than just changing the u-joints. That centering ball in the rear cv can be a pain in the ass your first time. Take one of these guys up on their offer or take mine as its the same. I'll help/show you and you'll be good to go for next time.

U buy the parts and I'll press them for free. Doesn't take 5 min.

So I've been lazy and have't order the parts yet lol college has been slammed back.

Not to beat a dead horse, but once I take the 4 bolts on the front and back of the driveshaft what is a straight forward way to hitting the driveshaft in the right spot to knock it out?

I have some PB blaster too... just want to make sure I hit it in the right spot so I dont' break anything. Should I push the front axle away from me while holding on to the driveshaft?

How far are you from campus? I might have some time between and after class that I can drop by and help ya out a lil.

You don't have to hit anything. Take out the bolts, stick something in the pinion yolk and pry the joint out. This will compress the shaft a little. Then the weight of the shaft will pretty much remove the CV end from the t-case yolk with just a little wiggle.

I live near Wild Wing Cafe down Berkely Place.

Message me your number. If it's not my front driveshaft that's causing problems it may also be my tranny mount.

I have no classes tomorrow if you wanted to come by.

Thanks

It's not very likely that the front driveshaft is causing a thump when you accelerate. What are the symptoms? when exactly does it happen? What exaclty happens?

There is a wealth of knowledge on this site, so it's very likely that some of these guys can diagnose the problem without you even having to take anything apart. Give us a good description of it and maybe we can help...

If you need a hand let me know. I live right down the street from uncc. I have a garage full of tools and anything you might need to fix it. I also work for a parts store so if you need something i could pick it up the next day at work and have it ready for you.

I meet up with him today and looked at it. One of the u-joints in the double cardon joint is wore out a little but not to bad. It had a very minimal vibration but enough to feel it while riding around.

May want to check the trans mount and motor mounts too.

Got the front DS off! Some of my vibrations did go away, so I'll replace all the ujoints while I have it out. Could I pay anyone on here to press and replace the ujoints on the back??

Also, I still have a clunking sound when accelerating or going up a hill. It's the the left of the shifter and right beside my foot when driving...control arms, transfer linkage, etc.? Any suggestions?

Check the front control arm bushings for wear, had one drive me crazy on my XJ, it would thump when changing directions, IE: backing out of a parking spot, and then going to drive. Took me weeks to find that one, and then made me feel stooopid
