so I want to coat my garage floor and make it all nice and clean. problem is, I have a spot of oil on there about 2ft wide by 3ft long. it's been there for almost a year and I never did anything about it. anyway, the guy at Lowe's said that I'd need to get the oil spot up before the floor coating will stick correctly. what would any of you recommend for absorbing the oil as much as possible? thanks in advance,

Corey

One of the best things I've found to remove all trace of oil & it's stain...

Fireplace ash mixed with water into a stiff paste, spread/troweled heavily over the oil/stain, let stand until dry and vacuumed up. Works on smooth finished concrete and broomed concrete equally well.

After you try everything else, get some muriatic acid and do a wash down with that, just follow the directions for cleaning floors and keep it well ventilated.

purple power!!!

mineral spirits will work, but contain it so it dosen't run off the floor outside. and keep it ventilated/away from sparks. After the oil spot is up I would prep the whole floor with muriatic acid before painting to get the last traces of anything that could cause an adheshion problem.

When I do garage floors I pressure wash them and then use muratic acid. After that I flush it with water and let it dry.

Then I sand it down with a BFS (big f'in sander), blow it clean and wipe it with denatured alcohol, and go to town with the coating.

Be sure you get that stuff really clean if you are doing epoxy flooring. Epoxy is not permanent, but you can make it last a lot longer if you prep it right.
