So yesterday I was trying to prep my old toyota frame rails so that front rail reinforcement plates could be welded on. The previous owner coated the frame in por-15 or something similar to prevent rust. Not I am having a bitch of a time removing it. I tried a flap disc, but it was loading the disc up pretty bad. I also tried paint thinner and it didnt seem to do much to it. Maybe slather some on there and let it sit over night? Any suggestions?

I invested in a HF pot blaster just for this, it's messy, and I won't say it powers through, but does make life easier. Soak in aircraft stripper...and start throwing sand at it.

thanks guys ill stop by the store after work to pick up some aircraft paint stripper and see if thatll do the trick.

Those braided wire cups (or the straight ones) for a angle grinder might work fairly well.

So while we are on the subject, it sounds like it is stuck to the frame really good. Is it like an undercoating or what? Does it have a matt black finish or? I am taking my Willys truck down to bare metal and was wondering if I should go with Rustoleum paint or try POR 15?

It's pretty much barge/ship paint. It's some tough shit, as you have found out. I feel like it's almost too durable to use one a frame unless you know for certain you'll never have to remove any of it.

Welp took the truck out yesterday after work and slathered a ton of aircraft paint stripper on it. Let it sit for about 12 minutes and started scrapping. Id say most of the por15 came off or atleast the top layer. Then I used a pressure washer to clean it up a bit. Worked out pretty good.

Por-15 is some tough stuff though, I had a pretty hard time removing it until I tried paint stripper. I suspect the previous owner was trying to prevent the frame cancer from spreading. Now Im trying to patch the frame up a bit and plate the front, so it had to come off. Honestly I might consider recoating the frame in por-15 once I get the new leaf spring mounts and plating done. Id say finish is somewhere around semi-gloss to gloss. I think it comes in grey or black. It does break down after awhile when exposed to UV light.

It definitely dulls if left out in the sun. What most I know do is coat it with POR then top coat it with any gloss paint. I prefer Rustoleum black high gloss. I have no proof but for some reason the high gloss is more durable.
