Last year I had the wifes car tinted 20% all the way around. Thought I could get it to pass but the first place I took it to said no, and actually failed it in the system. So now I'm removing it.

Found a video online using 409 and a trash bag. Soak it down, stick a trash bag to it (black shiny one) park in the sun for 20 minutes or so. Worked like a charm.
I'm not doing the very back glass, hoping I can slide past with leaving it. But good to know this works very well, and peels right off leaving no glue. I was very impressed. I even wondered if it came off so easy Just cause it was so hot in general so I tried without the trash bag and cleaner, no go. Left a bunch of glue so I stopped. It worked perfect so I thought I'd share.

Pics will not load for some reason, I'll try to add them later. Heading out to pull the back door Windows now.

heat gun will work too. the black trash bag is to use the suns energy to create heat. the heat releases the glue. just use a heat gun and razor scrape blade.

All my trucks have 5% all around and I've never been failed. I just go to a normal express lube place in town. I don't know anybody there or nothing.

I use to have it like that. Would have found a place that would hook me up, but now that its been failed I just took it off

Done it, they rolled them right up to check them. Apparently they have really cracked down on checking places that pass illegal cars. I'm getting them tinted again after it passes. Just gonna go legal this time.

We have a DMV guy that has been giving the shops around here a hard time because of tint. Looks like they could find something more productive to do. Like stopping the cars with no insurance/tags/tail lights or the one riding around on a 30 day tag that is at least 2 yrs old.

Doesn't the rules just apply to the front driver and front passenger windows? Or has it changed?

Find osmebody that has one of those garment steameers that you use for removing wrinkles from clothes.
Run the handle over the tinting to get it hot, it will peel right off.
I did it on my car for teh same reason, worked great.

Side note - if you hate ironing clothes, like most guys, those steamers are well worth the investment. I use it to freshen up my suit when I have to wear it (which is liek 4 times a year) amd setam shirts that get left in the dryer too long.

I already got it all off before I posted this thread. All methods work great, but to put the cleaner and bag on it, walk away and do something else, then peel it right off, I'd say that's the easiest way.

This thread hit just in time. I am removing mine on the truck to have them redone due to age. I was thinking razor blade and bunch on effort. Thanks for the tip!

Soak it real good in the 409, put the bag over it, let it sit for a bit, peel it off. I was pretty impessed at how simple it was.
Post up your results man!

Bumping this back from the dead. Anything changed in 6 years? I think I need to un-tint the front windows on my truck. They are fine during the day, probably legal, but the glare off the cluster and dash on the windows at night is ridiculous. It is impossible to see the mirrors, and difficult to distinguish between dash lights and headlights when trying to pull out at night. I'm 51% sure it's the add on tint. Anybody else experienced this?

So just reading the above. Ive never needed to use trash bags or 409...

there are two major common types of tints that I'm aware of ceramic and vinyl . I always buy ceramic and the only thing I do is wait for a warmish day and peel away. every now and then I might need to get some glue residue off one of the corners but I guess Ive just been lucky. there is Static cling tint too that just uses static electricity to cling to the window which is even easier as you can reinstall it if needed.

maybe others will chime in but reading the above I haven't needed to make it a project 🤷‍♂️

I should add that maybe Vinyl tint uses a different adhesive or maybe it depends on brand idk again never had the aforementioned issues of taking it off.

I just pulled the tint off of my TJ doors. Owner before me had them so dark that I couldn’t see crap at night. I used a heat gun to get a corner started, then I heated the rest up just to loosen the adhesive. Pulled right off without a single tear. I used some goo gone to get rid of the adhesive followed up by some windex. Both windows took literally 10 minutes total and are crystal clear.

THIS. This is what I wanted to hear. Did it make a difference with the night visibility?

Made a huge difference. I can actually see my side view mirror now. Next plan is to wire a light pod into my reverse lights so I can fo real see.
Thanks a ton. I had pretty much convinced myself this was the case, but it's good to hear from someone else with similar experience. I have contemplated taking it somewhere and having the tint removed, but I hate paying people to do something I can do myself, especially if it is a "science experiment" with the kids :D
