Ok so I'm broke down in my 89 Comanche 4.0. Has been randomly cutting off on me but would always start back. Now it will start but revs high then cuts off will not stay running even with foot on throttle. I was thinking idle air control or mabey throttle position sensor... can anyone narrow it down for me...

I know this thread is old, but did you ever find a solution? Im having the same problem currently, the thing used to run fine, now it will start every once in a while but revs and dies. The last time i drove it it just died while on the road and has had the starting issue since.

is this expensive? easy or difficult? Im to the point that im about to take it to a shop
Easy. I'm not sure what the parts cost, its been a couple years since I had to replace any of them. Is there a check engine light code? That is where you should start.

crank pos. sensor can be a b!tch the first time, its a pain to get to being up on the bellhsg sort of below the #6 intake prt. Crawl up under the drivers side, reach as far forward as you can with all the 1/4" drive extensions, and a wobbler socket (tape it up so its semi-rigid), and I think a 6mm. There's 2 bolts, don't drop them in the bellhsg. When my CPS went out, I was cruising 60MPH and it just cut out, got it to the side of the road, it would not restart, it was like it was out of fuel.

The revs and dies problem sounds like something stupid I did...knocked off a wire to the fuel ballast resistor (underhood onthe drivers side fender). It would crank and run for 1 second or so, then die. Plugged teh wire back, and voila, good to go

Ok, replaced the Crank Pos Sensor, still no joy. Anything else? Ive checked every vacume hose i can find and made sure theyre attached and not cracked or leaking. If anyone lives in raleigh and might be a little more mechaniclly inclined i would really like some help before i have to take it to a shop.
