I am planning a trip next summer and looking for feedback. I have briefly looked in to rv rentals, seems reasonable. I want to stay away from big campground type places. I know it will be hard to avoid the crowds on the 4th but I would like to be as secluded as possible. Is there anywhere a class c could get on the beach? Im not sure my new 4runner has the balls to unstuck a rv on the beach. It has been a very long time since I have been to obx so I was hoping y'all could give me some advice.

Why an RV and not rent a house? I've only been once, 5 years ago, and we rented a house in the last neighborhood before the road turns to beach. I want to go back and rent one of the houses only accessible by beach.

I will be taking my dogs with me and would be awesome if we could start at the south end and work our way north staying somewhere different each night.

I've seen folks take those 4wd merc sprinter vans on the beach out there. Depends on how much livable space you want and if you really need to pull another full size vehicle with you (not sure of the tow rating on them).

Im thinking a sprinter would be too small. Looking at 25-30'. I want to flat-tow my 4runner to do some beach driving and probably kayaks on top fishing gear and grill inside.

The beach is no camping and no over night parking.

Portsmith island and cape lookout might be options. However, I doubt a class c is going far on the beach.

Well that sucks. I kinda figured it was a bad idea. Anyone know what campgrounds are better than others? I dont care about amenities really, just less crowded and with in view of water. 4x4 beach access is a plus.

I could be wrong on this but it was my understanding that only the first gen 4Runner with the 2.0 and manual are able to be flat towed.

This is a sas 2nd gen 3.0 5spd with a top shift case. Ill pull the rear drive shaft anyway though

Frisco Woods in Frisco NC, you’re in and among scrub pine and sea grass, on sound side, not far from Hatteras ferry to Ocracoke, and have the whole OBX Hwy12 at your call.
We were there in mid July 2-3 years ago, was quiet, and not terribly busy, A holiday week could be a different world.
Frisco Woods Campground - Home

there is also Billy Mitchell Camp Ground (aka Frisco Campground) across the way, we drive thru there, it appears to be no facilities (no power water onsite)
it is on the ocean side, but does appear to have vehicular beach access from the entrance road.

Thats what im looking for! Thanks!

We took the camper two years ago started at kitty hawk and went south staying a few nights at the each stop I will get the names and post back up. Frisco Woods is where we stayed at The halfway point.

If you plan in advance, you could rent a different place for each night. Assuming you can get nightly rentals.
IMO the RV+4runner thing is too much of a PITA to deal with. You're going to be pulling that driveshaft every morning.
Unless you install manual hubs in the rear. Not simple but it's been done...

Found the names, we stayed the first few nights at OBX campground in Kitty Hawk. It’s a small place on the sound. We used it as home base the first few nights and drove north one day all the way to the state line on the beach. Also visited the Grave digger shop, kill devil hills and the aquarium at Manteo while staying there. Took the camper from there to Frisco woods next. Hint plan ahead for fuel between these two areas in was very tight getting my Raptor in a gas station with our 28 foot camper between the two. Visited Hatteras Light house and drove out to the point on the beach while there. Left there and took the ferry to Ocracoke with the camper. Spent the day there walking around before taking the next Ferry to Cedar Island. There are some National Park campgrounds along the beach on Ocracoke but I don’t think they have any hookups. There is a good place to park at the marina and walk around town. Once at Cedar Island we drove to Harkers Island and stayed the last few nights at Harkers Island RV resort. It’s a small campground with a marina. While there we took a charter boat out to Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout. I was very happy with all three campgrounds and want to do the trip again.

none of the NPS camp grounds on Hatteras or Ocracoke have site power or water.

Oregon Inlet NPS campground just opened a few select sites with power this year, but i have no idea how many
