So, my wife and I live about 2-3 miles from where the furniture market goes down, and we just moved in less thana year ago...I am thinking that this fall, when the market comes back, that we could rent out our house....I have talked to some people and the money is good and its usually for 6 days, which might be a bit tough living with inlaws but I think it could be worth it.

Any of you guys do this? or have done it?

How do I even go about getting started to get my name out there?

My In-laws rent out their house twice a year for the furniture market. I think they get about $2,000 for the week for their house. They have been renting it out to the same group/family for many many years, so don't have to deal with advertising/etc. They live in North High Point/Colfax area. That is all I've got.

Make sure you don't rent it for a companyparty house. Happened to an acquaintance....5k for the week...renter moved out all their furniture, moved in their own stuff...neighbors weren't pleased with the activity and traffic well into the night.

What about insurance. Normal homeowners policy probably won't cover once you rent it. My commercial policy for my rental is about 25 percent more. Hate for something to happen and you are left holding the bag.

This is what I was wondering as well....Although I think you can choose who you want to rent your house if you go through a company or most people that I have heard say they have the same people rent from them every year....

you mean your house guests who stay with you for a few nights, right ;)

Gonna show my ignorance here but what is the furniture market and why would a person need some place to stay???

Guy I used to work with would rent his house during the market. He had a special set of bed linens and stuff like that in storage he would swap our just for the week. He had done it for several years before we met and I assume still does it, so I'm guessing it is well worth the hassle.

Furniture market is big deal in high point. Bunch of people from all over come and spend money on overpriced crap and hookers. As to needing a place to stay I don't think local hotels can handle the amount of visitors the area gets.

Yeah but what is it?? Is it a big flea market type thing like labor day w/e in Hillsville Va or is just a week when the local furniture places has a big sale???

I think it is where companies showcase new stuff. Growing up around high point I've always heard of it but never really looked into it.

I dont know all the ins and outs but i do alot of hvac work for different market buildings and its pretty much just twice a yr all the furniture companys from all around the world set up show rooms and dealers from all over the world come in and look at new stuff and put in there big orders of what the want to buy and sell for the yr. Its amazing at the amount of money that is spent on remolding show rooms every 6 months to show case furniture for 5 days. But one dealer might buy several million dollars worth of furniture so guess its worth it idk.

It is mainly for furniture stores and shop, less for consumers. Though consumers do come as well.

It goes back to the days when something like 65% of the furniture in America was made in NC. Dealers from all over the country would come in and tell the local furniture shops what they liked so that they knew what to manufacture and how much that year. Now in a similar vein, the two or three large importers bring 1 of everything over from china so they know what to order containers full of.

Got it,thank you.So basically a SEMA show for furniture??

I live here in High Point and have been involved with market for years. The amount of people that come here is in the 80,000 range and there is only about 90,000 normal residents so motels are booked solid. We rented our house for years but with no where convenient to go crash for a week, we decided to give it up. We started out through a rental agency and charged more to allow pets since we had a dog we didn't mind. After the first market the couple called us direct and cut out the rental agency. If you don't mind the hassle, it's easy cash twice a year. I like the analogy of "SEMA" for furniture. You can't buy market samples directly from the showrooms but they are usually sold off to sample dealers who jack up the prices. There is always a middle man in about everything!
