repair play in steering?

There are several areas to look at on a CJ if you have the wanders. First check every thing in the front axle to see if they are worn.
Tie rod ends should be tight with no play.
Ball joints should have no up and down movement when you grab the tire at top and bottom and try to move it.
Wheel bearings should be propperly adjusted and not to loose.
Check the bushings in the spring eyes for deteriation.
Do you run shackles much longer than stock ? this can contribute.
Check the steering shaft for play.
Does your CJ have a suspension lift and no drop steering arm ?
Check the steering box for play, make sure it is mounted securely.

After checking these areas you should be able to ldentify and eliminate the problems.

You have to find out where the problem is. I fixed one by just tightening up the bolts that hold the steering box on. Also there is a bolt on the top that you can loosen and then use a screwdriver to turn the shaft if the play is in the gearbox.

1/2 the cjs I have owned ,solved the play with that worm gear
adjustment on top of stearing gear box. When adjusting hold
screw with screwdriver an release lock nut, hold lock nut an
turn screw in a little at a time while someone works steering
wheel back an fourth till tires react to steering wheel, a little
goes a long ways here, be sure an hold screw an secure
lock nut tight. If steering fills like it has sand in gears when
turning backoff adjustment a little.

if you over tighten the adjuster, it will seem as though it wants to stay turned. when you let go of the wheel it will not want to return to center.
If that happens to you, then back it off just a little. until it is as tight as you can get it with out that bound feeling.
