Replacement Screen Door.

So my apartment bedroom leads out onto the patio. I have no windows in here, besides the door, Ive got no way to cool the room down short of a fan.

The door that was on it didnt seal up right at all, and let anything that wanted to get in, in. I replaced it, spent two days getting the piece of shit to fit, stained it, but never finished it with a clear coat of any kind.

While the stain was drying, the door got caught by the wind and fell over, popping some stuff loose. I tried to fix it...but meh.

So fast forward to the last week...rain, ALL day, EVERY day. Swelled the door, to the point where it wouldnt open, or close.

So I destroyed the piece of garbage.

Long story short, what should I replace it with? I dont know why, but the thing was a bitch to fit in...I tried everything to get it to fit and it wouldnt, I had to plane it down quarter of an inch in some places. I want something that still lets air in, but isnt made of shitty wood (the door I had was pine)

staple some screen around the doorway, obviously installing another door isnt gonna work for you. if you want to go on the patio, walk around.

LOL that will be great when winter comes

Mac, I'm sure the problem is that the door frame isn't square, either wasn't put in right, or (more likely) has sagged/shifted over time. Putting a nice square door into an old frame is always fun.
is this at your home, or aren't you back in school now?
The *right* thing to do is to pull off the whole frame, and replace the whole thing; you can get an exterior door already mounted in the frame at Lowe's, and pop it in place. you can get a "cheap" steel one, that will last forever; w/o a window it will be maybe $150 for the whole thing. Putting it in place is fairly easy, esp if you have 2 people.
Then buy a cheap-ass screen door for $40 more and mount it to the frame on the outside, you can then leavet he door open and left the screen door do teh job of a window w/o having the bug problem.

Pine wood doors really should never be used as exterior doors w/o being well treated and covered by an awning or a screen door. The $40 invetsment of a screen door can save alot of money on the cost of the pricy main exterior...

if thsi is rented property, get ready for some real pissiness from teh landlord.

If it s rental property like ratlab said above just have the landlord replace the door. Should be free (the bitching will also be free from the landlord)..

Then if you want a free screen/glass door. I see them alot at Goodwill and The Salvation Army. You can also try Habitat for Humanity.. They have tons of great used goods there :)

Being that you are in H-Vegas, i would bet they have tons of stuff to find at the thrift good store. Your in furniture capitol!!

Pick me up a rocking chair!

The screen door is optional, meaning that the landlord isnt responsible for it. :shaking:

The real problem is, without it my room is like 500 degrees.

Or post #4. I did all the work for you besides installing it. :)

If you feel like pressing your landlord to fix it for you, give a call to the Boone Building Inspections Dept. and request a copy of their Minimum Housing Standards Ordinance. Most of those ordinances have a requirement for some sort of insect proof ventilation in every room on an outside wall. This is usually accomplished by screens on windows or doors.

Just another option to consider.

Problem is that you could also accomplish this with a central heat optnion of "fan without heat", e.g. turn system fan on but no central heat system.

So is there current no DOOR or no SCREEN DOOR? The post makes it sound like thge DOOR was removed.

went looking for the vinyl door today.

They had the right size, but the hinges came with it, and were riveted on the wrong side :shaking:

So its still 5,000 fucking degrees in here.

you can get the same door with the hinges on the other side...

FYI, since you decided to tackle this on your own without the landlord getting involved, expect to repair it correctly at your own expense.

they had no other doors left.

As for not getting the landlord involved...this isnt up to them. The screen is optional, so its up to me to get it installed.

However, if its true that I need some form of insect proof ventilation....i might press the issue, since their is no fan or screen in here.

....fall is coming soon....

I put a $50 vinyl screen door in my basement, got it a t lowes or home depot. You decide where the hinges go.

the one we were looking at was "hardware included". The hinge's were riveted on...so I couldnt remove them and switch sides myself.

The real problem is...I have no way to haul it to my apartment here in boone. The TJ is just too small (at least with the back seat still in, and for the life of me I cant get it out!). I suppose we could have ordered the right size, w/o hardware...but then Id have no way to get it here.

Here's what I bought http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100536890&marketID=282&locStoreNum=3604&categoryID=526693, it comes in 30", 32" and 36" widths. Hardware included, put it on whatever sie you want. It will fit on the roof of an SUV or in the bed of a pickup.

The landlord could have replaced or repaired the original door if you hadn't messed with it. Now it seems like you don't even have a door on your room?

Was there ever a screen door?

It sounds like there was never a screen door, only exterior door that you replaced because it was crap. Then the door you installed was damaged and you trashed it? Correct?

You can get an exterior door with a single or double hung window in it with a screen. However, they aren't the cheapest.

Or, like said before, put a vinyl (wood is cheaper but harder to maintain, fiberglass is good happy medium and looks better) exterior door on there (with the correct right or left hand hinges) and add a cheap screen door.

there are two doors. A regular door with glass panes, and a screen door.

Originally I though the screen door itself was warped, and thats why I threw it out and replaced it with a new one. Turns out it was just the door frame itself.

forget the door, you need A/C !!

Err.... If you can't get the back seat out of your TJ installing a door probably isn't going to work out well. Do you have A/C in any room? If yes, just get a fan to move some cool air into the hot room. If no, plopping in a window unit in other room + a fan might be the ticket.

Getting the back seat out isnt a matter of I cant do it because Im stupid, its because the damn thing is rusted in, and to be honest I dont really want to cut it out.

Im not wasting money on a window A/C unit either when I live in Boone. In 3-4 weeks it'll be cool enough not to have to worry about it. However, Id just like a screen door so it doesnt have to be so stuffy in here.

buy a window A/C unit at a yard sale. I'm sure there will be plenty of them coming up for sale. It'll be cheaper than buying a new door and your time/efforts of installing it. On a plus side, you can take it with you when you move and don't spend $$$ on someone else's property
