Replacement toilet tank?

Was fixing the flapper valve on the toilet in my room here, and dropped the stupid lid on the tank. So now a 5 dollar repair job is more like 65...

anyways

1. Where do I even get a replacement tank? Lowes hardware or something?

2. Are the tanks universal or does it have to be a direct replacement for my toilet bowl?

1. Lowes or Home Depot.
2. Pretty much all the same, the sizes//shapes may be different, but &generally* the big hole in the middle, and 2 holes for attaching to the base, all the same.
Take some measurements with you to Lowe's.

Worst case you can buy a whole one for $75, but that gets to be a big mess.

what happened? did the tank burst into pieces (*note i said "burst"), or did it just crack? my sophomore year, my toilet tank had a crack in it but rather than replace it, i just filled the inside edge of it with some kind of putty i got at home depot and all was good.

As mentioned I was surprised last time I was in that part of the store you can get a new one pretty cheap. Plus new one might be newer style, less water, type.

What kind of toilet is it? They do make replacement tanks. I've got a Kohler Wellworth in the shed I'm not going to use. Picked it up for the parts when it was on clearance at Lowe's.

^^ only you, Mark, would think of a potential need to have spare parts for your toilet. haha.

lmao spare toilet for parts.. Love it!

I bought the cheap one from Lowes several years back. It was only $50 then. I tried buying just the tank at first, but my existing toilet was older and it didn't seal properly. So for a few more dollars I bought the bowl. It worked out perfectly and had no problem flushing the bombs.

That's the route I recommend for you as well. New cheapy toilet (or Mark's spare one!) and a new wax ring. Installation is quite simple.

I bought a new "universal" tank seal for my tank when I took it off and painted behind it a couple months ago and it didn't fit. WAY different? Mine had a shoulder and new seal was for a flat press fit. Tried it several times with no luck so I had to use old dry rotted seal again. If the old seal ever fails, I'd probably have to get a whole new tank. So there are differences in tanks.
If you buy a tank, just be sure to pick up a new seal and make sure it fits. I see complete toilets for free on CL every now and then. $20 all day long. Just depends on what it's going in? Married or have a GF?

the toilet says mancesa on it? I tried looking that up but dont really get any hits.

The place is just a rental, but I dont feel like messing with the landlord on this one, mostly because she is already a total bitch and wont be too happy about this :shaking:.

Also, just a friendly warning, do NOT try to do toilet repairs after a few beers, or this is what happens.

Dave, whereas your point is valid, I had a good reason. I'm in the midst of a bathroom remodel, and was debating what to do about the turlet. I've got an old elongated bowl, pre low-flow model. It needed a rebuild, thoug. The kit to rebuild it, with the gaskets, float, stopper, and all, is like $30. I picked up the tank kit, with all those parts in it for, well let's say, next to nothing. I think I'm going to go with a new turlet, though, as I now need a tan one. Mac, bring me a case of Bud Red, and you can have the tank. It's bisque-colored.

I would strongly reccomend going ahead and talkng to her about it.
From previous posts I've gathered this is a small private deal, which means she's going to notice later anyway unless you find an exact match. Then she'll be even more pissed.
Just call and tell her it broke, but you are taking full responsibility for it and replacing it. Ask if she would prefer you to just go ahead and replace the whole thing so it all matches and is ensured to seal correctly.

This little bit of openness can help with the relationship. She may also prefer to pay for a plumber to do the replacement anyway so she knows "it's done right".

BTW, if you do find that you are just placing the whole thing, it's not rocket surgery, but there are some things to look out for.
1 - there's a wax ring between the base and floor. It's tempting not to - but you DO have to replace that.
2 - there will be some studs sticking up from teh floor that the base sits on. When you put the new bottom down, get these tight, but don't over-torque. Actually that gies for all of them (incl the top-to-bottom bolts). It will crack and you're hosed.

Screw her. Jb weld it back together.

Or, conversely...pick up a drunk girl at a bar, go back to her place, hook up, then swap toilet tanks while she sleeps.

I worked for Kohler for 7 years directly selling to Lowes and THD, so I consider myself an expert on #2.

Lowes and THD sell mostly Toilet to Go's... Tank, bowl, seat and wax ring in one box. The cance of you finding a replacement tank is extreemly low. Can find a cheap $50 toilet at THD/Lowes. I would not put this in my home but since you live in an apartment it should be good.

If the toilet is a Kohler call 1-800-4kohler and thell them that the lid cracked and you dont know how. Kohler is a great company with great customer service and they may just send you a replacement free of charge.

If it is not a Kohler try the local Ferguson plumbing distrubuter they sell all makes of toilets and may be able to get the part for you at a charge.

Sounds like you got your shit sorted out...

What amazes me is the true team effort going on here.... I've never seen such a vast group SO knowledgeable about any one topic...

I'm trying to figure out is its cause your all full of shit.. or break toilets a lot... :flipoff2:

Since your from hickory, next time you need something try Western Carolina Supply. We have alot more than Ferguson and better prices. And its always better to support a local mom and pops type place anyways.
