Rescued Dogs Thread

That's him in my avatar. Pure bred blood hound. Runt of the litter from what I can tell. Other pups wouldn't let him eat so he was skin & bones when I got him. He was passed around a couple of times then came home with me. He's scared of his own shadow. Over all pretty psychotic. He's useless as a working hound so he gets to live the good life.
 
Otis, rescued him from SPCA in Raleigh August 2000, was apporx 8-9weeks old, pit mix. very mellow, and very into the kong ( got his head stuck in a wheel as a pup trying to get kong out ) He passed Jan 2 3010.

His buddy behind him and in pic below is Metro, he was found as a stray. Buddy of mine found him laying in his driveway on the Sunday paper ( hence the name Metro, Obituary just didn't seem right...... ) Husky Shepard mix.
got him March 2001, he's still waggin and a happy guy, pic below is about 3 weeks ago sitting in the living room with Mom.

There was a third dog that we had rescued, he was full pit, was ok until he got about 1.5years old, he lunged at wife twice, very aggressive, put him outside to cool off, he attacked Metro. he had to leave. Not all can be saved unfortunately.
 
This is Molly Anne. I got her from the local animal shelter. She was found on a major roadway when she was picked up. I was working my regular shift and she looked at me like she belonged with me. She loves to ride the Runner, she kayaks with me and she lets my daughters dress her up. She stays by my side all the time. I have even taken her on patrol with me. She is the best.

This is Alton, my almost 4 year old rescue from the shelter in Wilkes. I got him at about 4 months old. Best decision I have ever made and he is spoiled rotten and travels just about everywhere with me. The first day I met he and his sister, he would not even come to the front of the kennel. Took him outside and he just curled up in a ball and wouldn't come near me. Not social at all. I went back the next day and he came right to me and curled up with his head in my lap when I sat down to play with him. Needless to say that sealed the deal.

I guess he just wanted to see if you'd come back to him! Animals have their own ways of developing trust and it's pretty cool most of the time.


A little update on Jenny.... my sister came over with her dog and took them out around the yard and back in the field behind my shop. I came home a few hours later and noticed Jenny's face/nose was swollen all up :( :confused: Doesn't look like she was bitten by anything, but perhaps she was allergic to something out there. Thistle or something that grows back there...who knows? I gave her a Benadryl and she doesn't act like it hurts or anything, but I'm keeping a very close eye on her. I may need to give her another half a pill. She's eating and drinking just fine, thankfully.
 
Not sure mine counts I (rescued) it from life in a sub division now he goes with me everywhere and has 16acres to play on my new buddy loki a couple in Fayetteville wher changing station and couldnt take him with them.I changed his name to loki when I got him he is a akc registered german shepherd weighs 90lbs and is 1yr old full of energy loves the kids and has a very non aggressive personality .I haven't had a pet in 12 years I just didnt feel the need I had forgotten how much companion ship and enjoyment can come with a good dog

Great story by the OP! I agree with others, I don't see how people can just abandon a dog or be as cruel to them as I've seen.
We have 3, Hank (blue), Ginny (brindle), and Molly our beagle. My wife found Molly 9 years ago pretty much the same way you did, abandoned and starving. Hank was bread for running bears but the guy I got him from said he wasn't gonna be a good bear dog. How he knew this at 8 weeks old I don't know, best dog I've ever had. Ginny came last, got her from the vet. Her last owner pretty much just left her there and never returned to pick her up. I love my dogs

It's amazing to me how my dog can tell which people I like, don't like, and she can tell when my dad is drunk and she growls at him. Good dog...gooood dog! :D


Of course, they can also tell when their owners don't feel good and they can be all sweet and cuddly if they want to be :lol:

Here's our pound puppies born early 1997, pic circa 2002. Bandit, the black lab mix, is starting to show her age, but doing great for 17 years old. We picked her up in early 1998 to keep the other dog (Casey) company. It was estimated that she was almost a year old at the time. Casey, a husky mix, was our first rescued dog, got her from the pound in summer '97 when she was just a few weeks old. We had to put her down in 2012, as basically all her senses and functions were just shutting down. Both are medium size, 40-45lbs, and couldn't have asked for better puppies.

Another Bandit. He showed up at the house while we were doing yard work. No tags or nothing, he was starved and very weary of anyone. One week later he was camping with the family. We weren't ready for another dog, my wife's German Sheppard had to be put down, and my Lab had to be relocated to a home more suited for him. But Bandit found us and he's a perfect fit for our family. We also have a two cats outside who were strays. Odd, I tend to weed those out when they are wild and show up to steel food and fight with my family!
