Looking to apply for a new job in the same field.

School Administrator.

I'd like a good shot at getting this position.

I've been able to move up in the current ranks without having to go through the whole application process in my current district. Would be moving school districts.

Has anyone ever had any good luck with hiring a resume writer?

What very little I know about it I learned from a job placement specialist at the welding school I went to. It was a large portion of our grade to be able to handwrite a potent resume. I paid the least amount of attention to this portion so when it comes to filling out resumes the only thing I remember is that the opening header means everything. Employers scan through resumes very quickly and unless they see something that pops out in a matter of seconds, they won't give the rest of it the time of day. Very unlikely they will sit there and read every word of every resume and it's not worth their time to.

Regardless of content, make sure the file name includes your name. I had a boss that would immediately throw out any resumes that didn't have the applicant name because it wasn't worth his time to rename the file.

The couple hundred bucks it’ll cost won’t hurt...every single one of them will tell you your resume needs to be tailored for the role you want and accentuate the required skills for that role. From there, formatting on length, layout, titles, relevant experience, supplemental info (city of job, dates of job), etc etc will pretty much change with everyone you talk to. Most hiring managers, you have about 30 seconds to grab their attention, so you’ll want the most impactful info in the top half of the top page. Some Recruiting services will rewrite resumes, but you’ll want a recruiter that’s dealt with the field/role before...otherwise call up a local college/university and see who they suggest.

The higher level the job, the more the polished the presentation should be, and the more thoroughly it will be read by the people doing the recruitment (hopefully). It may be worthwhile to spend the money on a resume writer, but it also may he worthwhile to find one who has experience writing for the level of job you're looking for. So if you need someone with experience in resumes for executive recruitment for example, seek someone with those skills (things I'll never need to worry about: being hired at the executive level).
This may be completely unnecessary for a school system though, because I have no idea how similar or different that would be from general industry.

If you're just going to get dumped into some keyword database, you're dealing with the hiring equivalent of a blind person rolling dice. At that point, nothing really matters because they're not really that interested in proper and constructive hiring practices, else they wouldn't be using a keyword database.

Well, on a positive note, there are now tons of ads for resume templates and formatting.

I'd hate to spend the money just for something I am just vaguely considering.

But, a nice resume would be handy. Of course the job posting closes on the 20th.

Find someone with knowledge about the place and location and specific job.
I expect you know this if it's true for you education field, but with my wife working for the college system ....... they have some messed up ways
of doing things.
One job .... the hiring process and interview actually included being interviewed by people who would be working UNDER the position.
Actually 2 of the 5 people making the decision were.

Matt
