Well after oral surgery that left me with 9 bottom teeth. ( have a new aftermarket set on order LOL) I finally got back to tinkering with the LUV.

For those who missed my introduction I will give a short rundown.

About 2 months ago I got a call to pick up a truck or scrap. When I got there it was an 81 Luv 4x4 mikado that had been sitting for about 7 years.

I brought it home and put in a good battery and poured gas in the carb and it started. The electric fuel pump was shot so I borrowed one from a buddy (between the two of us we have about anything you would ever need for a vehicle) and got it running. Drove it a bit on some back country roads and played with it in the mud and decided it was worth keeping. Even on bald tires it ran through spots my heavy 4wd Suburban sinks in. It pulled so well I was having trouble deciding if the 4wd worked or not. Finally had the wife drive it in to the mud and floor it while I watched from a distance.
Here is the wife driving it for the first time.

Initially it wanted to overheat after about 20 minutes of driving, but after a couple of heat and cool cycles it stopped. I am guessing something congealed in the cooling system during dormancy.

I bought an electric fuel pump and made an ugly mounting bracket out of scrap metal and hooked it up. Truck starts perfect after being pumped 5 times. Runs great on the old long dormant spark plugs.

The turn signals started working after driving it about 30 minutes. I guess something was corroded from sitting so long. It starts perfect when it is cold. When it heats up it wont start anymore. I thought it was a bad battery and I replaced it, but it is still doing it. I am going to pull the starter and have it rebuilt. Good thing the little booger is light enough to push.

The alternator seems to be weak. The headlights are super dim. With the headlights on the turn signals wont work, nor will the blower. So the starter will be bundled off to the shop with the starter. While I have it apart I am going to check all the grounds and connectors for corrosion. Does anyone know of a higher output alt that is a direct bolt in for it? I have a few plans that will need more power.

It needs a brake booster. When I first drive it I thought it had manual brakes. Took another look under the hood and behold a brake booster. It stops fine it is just a bit hard on my bad knee.

Other things to address
Tune up, oil change, and fluid flush
New tires – possibly on 15 inch steel Trooper rims
The passengers side interior door handle needs to be replaced.
The glove box door needs supports.
Radio needs to be replaced with a working one.
Parking brake cable needs to be installed.
Fix back-up lights
Fix Hazard lights
Find seat cover before the factory one disintegrates completely
Find less cancerous body.

Oh yeah also need to fix the fang on the front skid plate where the PO got it hung on something.

In the future I want to build a crane for it since it will get in and out of places that the tractor wont due to being so small. It will make my life a million times easier when I pick up scrap out in the woods. It will be something like this.

It will fit on the front too.

Good news on the charging problem. I went out to play with it today and found that the alternator was held in by one bolt and was flopping around. A quick crawl through my private junk yard and I had teh right thread bolt to put back in the bottom and lo and behold it charges now.

I also found out that I only need a short piece of aircraft cable and to fab up a couple of fasteners to make the parking brake functional.

Then I swapped the tires from my 86 PUP yard truck to the LUV because they actually had tread on them and were the same size. Painted the rims black too. Looks better than rust colored.

Also searched through my pile of stereos and found a 2 knob Kenwood that I am going to install as soon as I find some speakers that will fit behind the seat.

Nice! I'm diggin' the crane idea. Glad to hear you're feeling better too!

Thanks bub. For a while there I was wondering if someone could die from a tooth ache. When I got to where whiskey wouldn't even dull the pain I had to do something.

I can't wait to get the crane built. Although I am going to have to find a way to attach it to compressed rust and make it strong enough to lift.

I dig it as well & x2 on you feeling better.

yea i hear you bring in some interesting things from time to time, lol i know your across the road neighbor jphn eller. ps i need a pair of really rusted out at the bottom no windows needed doors for a 82 chevy truck.. haha

i really do need some. ill cut 14 inchs off the bottom any way and then cut them down like a custom half door, so you can have half the door back for the scrap pile lol. what you want for a pair?

Put my crane idea into practice - kinda.

I needed to move several engines across the field and my buddy had his tractor out of town so I had to rig up a crane. I had an old davit crane that I picked up a few years back and I strapped it in and put it to work. Worked perfect.
