I have never rebuilt an axle before, but I want to put a set of 4.56 or 4.88's (currently has 4.10's) in my 97 4 cylinder wrangle to help it turn 33x12.50's. I am not Particularly worried about gas milage this is just a play vehicle. I don't really want to pay some one to install the new gears for 2 reasons 1. am cheap and 2. I like working on my own vehicle gives me an excuse to be in the garage drinking a beer.

The wrenching part of it does not bother me I have been working on cars since I was a kid. The part that has always made me avoid it is setting the back lash and preloading the bearings never really had a good understanding how to do it.

Does anyone have any good suggestions on the best way to do this I still have the stock d30 in the front and d35 in the rear. I don't do alot of heavy off roading yet so I am putting an 8.8 upgrade on the list of things to do down the road. Probably after I up grade to at least a 4.0L.

Be glad to get together with another tightwad and show you what I know :)

It's definately NOT recommended by the experts as tolerances are quite high. However, with proper tools and patience it can be done by someone with good mechanical skills and the proper know how. IMO the key is the willingness to take it all apart and start over (even after 10 tries) if it's not just right. You CANNOT settle for close like you can in horse shoes or Atom bombs or you're risking failures down the road :)
