I need to remove the ring gear on my CJs Dana 30 to install a lockrite. I can't seem to get any of the ring gear bolts to loosen. I tried a breaker bar with it still in the axle and the yoke chained so it won't turn with no luck. I don't have a vise or air tools anymore. Last time I did this I had both and had it done in under an hour.

Any suggestions or tricks you may have would be appreciated.

Put a box end wrench on the bolt & smack the end of the wrench with a lump hammer. Make sure the ring gear is locked down & can't spin.

Put a wrench on the ring gear bolt, turn the ring gear until the wrench contacts the housing, turn yoke with socket and ratchet, this will loosen the bolt.

also make sure the bolts are not left hand ( if they are they will have a L on the head)

last time i did something like that without the proper tools, i left it installed and had someone hold the brakes until I got all the ring gear bolts loose. Tightened them back the same way...

X2! Works good. Been a while, but I dont remember having to remove the ring gear to put a locrite in... Am I getting old and senile? I thought it slipped in where the spideys lived?

With a dana 30 that has 3.73 gears or numerically higher, the ring gear has to be removed to pull the crosspin.

Would love to use the brakes but I have no shafts, knuckles, rotors, calipers lines, master cylinder, booster, pedals, or body yet. I'm in the middle of a frame off. Lol

or clearance the gear alittle to pull the pin. Its acceptable as long as you don't get crazy and will not affect its strenght or make it noisey. I've done it and my differential manuals from Randy's even sugest doing it.

I read that too. I looked at the gear and I would have to grind more than half off of 2 teeth to slide the pin out. I don't want to take that chance.

To remove the ring gear in my CJ D30 I pulled the carrier and put in a vise using a thick towel to insulate it from the vise jaws then I used a strong arm. They shouldn't be that tight I think torque is like 30-40 ft pounds.

now I'm curious, what is the ratio?
