when I first started listening to bluegrass I bought a bunch of Doc Watson stuff. he's the one that really got me interested in it. great man, hate to see him go.
After I heard about his passing, I went out to the shop for a while. While was I looking at the collection of Merlfest posters on the wall... Including the one in '97 when Ivy decided to come into the world 2 weeks early durring the midnight jam. They had to stop the show so we could get her mom out to a golf cart and then to a waiting ambulance. (If you were there, I apoligise for the interuption!) Ivy attended the next year for her 1st birthday... Thinking about speaking to Doc on the back steps of the Sparta school auditorium before he played and when he shook my hand, how thick his calluses were on his picking fingers... The fact he was blind and still split his own firewood... They dont make them like that any more. He made millions of people happy all over the world and overcame multiple hardships. Thats a damn fine legacy.
