I remember getting his bbq when I was a kid, the family stopped there on the way to Salter path or Harkers Island etc. 2 or 4 times a summer to fish and camp etc. In 84/85 I lived in Gboro going to Wayne CC and I would eat there at least once a week. It seemed like Wilber was there every time I went there and he was friendly and would make small talk to every as he moved around the place. Asked him if I could see the pit and he showed it to me and told me about the process of making the que and about he started out.

It's been a while but Wilber's was good stuff!

They had some terrible health violations and he was a card carrying Hillary supporter, but they had some good food!

An investment group bought the place and I think it's opened back up now, but not 100% sure.

Meh, it wasn't as bad in the back as people liked to say it was. They usually got dinged on nit picky mess. I'll put it to you this way, I delivered there and still ate there. šŸ˜‚

Also, since being bought, the new ownership has spent a freaking mint getting the back in top notch shape. It is on par with any brand new restaurant cook area now.

My buddy's wife worked for the crowd that bought it. I heard some stuff that'd probably surprise you.

I'm quite sure it's up to snuff now. Hell, I still ate there too.

I've been in the back of barbeque restaurants quite literally, since I could walk. Absolutely nothing surprises me any more. One of my earliest memories is being planted on 4 tiles by the back door at Gardner's in rocky mt by my granddad when I was about 3. I vividly remember being told that if I moved off those four squares he was going to tear my ass up šŸ˜‚
