I need some more protection for my wheels (your basic 15" steel wheels). They are well used and have dents & dings on them. 2 of them have slow leaks and when I'm on the trail they tend to leak faster (nothing a hammer & OBA can't fix). I want to stiffen the lip of the wheel up so I was thinking weld-on rock rings. Then I got to thinking that maybe the bent/dented wheels will still leak after the rock ring if they're not 99% true before welding them on....maybe I should go to full beadlocks? This will only be for 2-3 years until I go to 1tons & H1s.

What say you NC4x4?
 
I looked at rock rings and diy beadlocks. The price difference is not too much more to go beadlocks. You do almost the same amount of work welding on the rock rings as the beadlocks. The only extra is bolting on the outer ring.

My last big trip I punished my rims and lost the bead several times. I vote beadlocks, you can always sell them when you are done.
 
I say beadlocks, simply because H1's are so heavy. I ran H1's for a while, and they were great for the double beadlockedness, but $$$ to recenter, $$$ for rockrings, and a little bit limited on tire selection because of the 16.5" diameter.
 
I'm running rock rings on my Samurai. I had to add them after bending the lips of the rims a few times. I still have a lot of trouble with dirt, tree bark, and crap getting between the rim and tire and causing them to leak down. I have to break the bead and clean the crap out every once in a while. I originally planned to add inner air locks at some time later on. I am concerned with weight though, so didn't want to go to a weld on beadlock kit.
 
If your wanting H1's later why not just do them now? I bet the cost of the rock rings on temporary wheels would be about the same as buying H1 centers a second time...

Good point, I hadn't thought of that...

More info on the topic - I'm wanting to run H1s since I already have 4 wheels & 6 37" military tires that I basically got for free...
