I've been tossing around some ideas for what to do when I make rock sliders (for my YJ), and I wanted to get some opinions. I thought about just getting some 4" angle and using that, which is fairly typical. I also thought about trying to incorporate a 45 into the bottom of my slider so that it will act like a boat side and slide over rocks easier, but I'm not sure of how to make a 45 strong enough to handle the duty. Would an angled slider be a waste of fabrication time? Also, if I were using a metal brake and did the 45 out of one piece of say, 3/8", would that hold up? Throw me some opinions. Because of the height of my ish, I'd like to be able to step on a little something to help me get into it, but I can always just step extra high if I need to do so. Would a slider with a 45 degree brake in it, out of 3/8", with a piece of DOM welded to the part that bolts onto the body do the trick? Keep in mind that I'd like to keep it economically feasible, otherwise I'd sink the $500 into something pre-fabbed, but I don't have the budget to do that.

3/8's is about twice as much as you'll need...

...stick with some 1/4 max...cheaper and easier to work with...

as for the boatsiding...unless you're gonna cut your tub out up to the door frame and then boat side it in I'd say just do the same 'ol thing everyone else has and get you a piece bent in a 90 and cut out so it clears the body mounts...

3/8" plate PLENTY heavy!

Also...I kinda like the look of something like this...

Thanks guys. I didn't know how thick it needed to be, but I guess now that I think about it, 1/4" makes a lot more sense.

Rock Slider Idea!

You are on the right track. The idea is killer and exactly what I am looking for. But someone beat us to it! Hanson made them for the XJ. I think they stopped though for the XJ.
you can find them here:

They do have a few cool ones for the TJ's and others. Check them out at www.HansonOffroad.com I guess you could easily make them with 1/4" angle cutting one side shorter to get the desired angle and welding the flat stock to the back or another piece of angle as your support. If I knew how to really weld I would do it. I need some practice I guess.

I'm in Alamance. Where could I get some steel around here?

Here is the design if you want to use it 336wheeler. Granted it is for a TJ but I am sure you can make whatever adjustments needed for your Jeep. If you don't do it yourself make sure you use someone who can deliver on the quality and doesn't take four months to do them or asks for more money than they quoted to build them after you have given them half of the money.

The cage is now bolted to them as well.
