Thanks to CRS!
We are set up for 11/18 FROM 9AM-2PM.

Lets Get a roll call for the workshop.

Here is what you'll need for the workshop:
So the list (per pair of lights) of what I did. Others have done theirs differently. IMHO the relay and fuses are the most important as the protect the rest of the rig. I am really guessing on the wire lengths, but I know I used a lot and its always nice to have extra. Its nice to take with you on the trail.
Most people have bought the cheap $15 lights at Wally World. The lights are good, but the wires it comes with are to small a gauge in my opinion. I went with 10 gauge wire from Home Depot, using 3 different colors. I also have a 30 AMP relay to better control things and protect the switches. The $15 lights do come with a switch, but I bought a different style so I could mount 4 switches. I only have 2 lights, but I plan on more. Then you will want various connectors and zip-ties.
Lights
Switch
30 amp 12 volt Relay
30 amp inline fuse for Relay
20 amp inline fuse for switch
10 ft black 10-gauge wire
20 ft red 10-gauge wire
10 ft blue 12 or 14 gauge wire
10 ft red 12 or 14 gauge wire
10 ft black 12 or 14 gauge wire
Wire connectors for switch, relay and lights
Zip-Ties
3/8 inch Split Wire Loom

Stu Olson's site is good to check out the install.

my wife is due 11/14...so we'l just see how that goes...

if I'm "free" that day...I'll be up there whether I'm working on mine or helping somebody else...nice living <5 minutes from the shop...:D

another option for some of you that may want to just come work on yours but don't necessarily want any rock lights...

one of the best lighting "upgrades" you can do is rewire the factory headlights and/or foglights directly to the battery using a relay...

30-40% increase in light output...

you need some of the same parts:

wire
relay
inline fuse
connectors

you just don't need lights or a switch...you wire it so that the factory wiring (and switch) are the "trigger" or "signal" wire on the relay, so they work just like OEM...

This is a really good idea for anybody who hasnt done it yet. It saves wear and tear on the switch inside on the dash. I know on the older XJs all the juice goes through the dash through the switch for the lights. Plus the lights are brighter:D I would love to attend but I will be flying back from Europe that day and dont think I will be able to make it.

A few things that has not been discussed. I know any of you that has taken old wiring apart has seen corrosion on the wires, connectors, and connections. This can be prevented by using a no oxidation grease on all connections.
In the link that was provided I noticed two things.
1. they had wire going thru body without any extra insulation, grommet or any other kind of protection to keep the wire from rubbing due to vibration for what ever reason. A little bigger hole and extra tape around the area to protect it works good. A tight tie wrap on both sides helps keep it from slipping out.
2. the other thing I saw was the connections on the relay. Any of you that have jarred your teeth on the trail know the abuse you you will put these things thru. Slightly pinching the connectors, and then putting some liquid tape on them really helps to keep them from coming off.

Also not mentioned is the type of switch. A good quality switch is a must. I prefer the lighted ones, since I am so pron to forgetting to turn them off.

While we agree that this is a good "upgrade" for your vehicles, let's keep this particular workshop on track and stick with rock lights only.

We would like to begin at 9am and be finished up by 2 pm.

We look forward to seeing everyone.

I may show up to this just to meet some of you guys (Ive had rocklights since the 90's).

Bringing it back up to the top!

If you're coming- which group?

If we don't get a little more interest maybe we should change the date. There is the Big Daddy's even that weekend and also the Rock Crawling Comp down in Spartanburg.

Give me a shout and let's talk.

Andy

yea, sure. I'll add my name to the list.

Andy and I spoke this morning and we are still good to go.
We both agree that we should have between 5 and 10 vehicles to make this a success.
I'd like to get some more folks to commit to this.
John

I'll be there - but just to see if I can get a free Mountain Dew from Andy. I already have a rock light on my TJ - I keep it in the glove box.

Stewart

I will be there. Putting on a pair of lights.
