Hi All,
Took my buggy out for the 4th time and twisted off a Stock rockwell shaft in the front. It was the long side Inner that broke.
I am weight my options and would like to know what others think.
Replace stock broken shaft with Another stock (U Joint shaft) $250
Upgrade to Oversons 16 spline Alloys $1000
Upgrade to 2" violators $2500
I am leaning towards putting another stock shaft in. Maybe my shaft was alreay on the way out when I got the axles? Whats the general Consnsus?
Rig Specs:
Est Weight 5000 lb
Stock TBi 454
TH400
203-205 doubler
44 Boggers Un cut on Stazwork beadlocks
The breakage occured with less than 1500 rpm trying to back up on a rock. (I was wedged between 2 huge rocks with only about a foot of play forward and backward. when I went to backup the rear hit the rock and I stared to give it a little throttle and bang 3 wheel drive)

It's a ball & claw too, usually the ends shatter on those. Something had to give if you were wedged in tight.

I'd just put a u joint style shaft and seal back in it in it if moneys tight.

If you're hardcore with money get some Ouverson's

I bet you're several hundred pounds light on your weight estimate, probably close to 1000 actually, but that's not the point...

The metallurgy on the u-joints shafts is better than the ball & claw ones, and allows for a little more twist, but there's a good chance that shaft was on its way out already.

I think I am gona try a stock u Joint shaft if I can find one. Any one got any good sources?

Who is breaking the 16 spline Cromo Stuff. And what kind Hp / weight is doing it?

My buddy (MW87toy) has broken a pile of the 16 spline alloys, running a 5k lb. buggy with an LS1 in the 400hp neighborhood. He just put the 47splines in the rear.

ive broke 6 stock shafts and ive got fiends thats broke several 16 spline cromos. put the 2" ones in it

For those breaking the 16 spline alloys. Were they harder to break than a stock shaft? What kind of tires (are we talkin cut boggers landing with your foot to the floor with a 5k buggy?)

The break that I had was in the front while backing up in a semi wedged spot. I could move forward and back about a foot between the rocks I was on. It seamed like way to easy of a break. My stock rear u joint shafts have not had any problem yet (But I only got 4 runs on them)

I would love to go to the 47 splines and proably will at some point. However Right now 5000 for 47 splines front and rear is just not there.

I am looking for a stock u joint axle to replace it so I can run it a few more times before we get too much snow. The maybe in the spring I can go alloys or 47's.

Does anyone warantee the 16 spline alloys? Does anyone else make them but overson?

Who has run and or broke the RCV shafts for the rockwell?

$5000 is crazy. Before I spent that I'd go back to 60's and get some of the unbreakable CV shafts. Lower the rig height and weight = win-win

I've seen guys break these too. Shawn rose has Broken 2 racing in ECORs.....

2 sets of longfields are not far from 5 grand then figure gears front and rear new nuckles the rocks start looking real nice
