Helping a friend with a 2.5 ton Rockwell, Have empty front u-joint housing and want to put in ball & claw type axles. Is the axle housing seal & retainer of this axle ok to use or is it different? I heard conflicting answers. Has anyone been through this and know for sure??? Thanks, Shorty

Yeah, the u-joints are better, just using on-hand ball & claw axles for now [no money to buy u-joint right now]

there is not much differance in the housing. i have a ball and fork housing with u-joint axles. i had to shave 7mm from the inner side of the spindle where the joint rides beside. in your case you might have some play but i dont think that small amount would matter. but thats just me

It's the axle seal, one is thicker than the other. I think the ball and claw are thicker so you have to mill or grind it down to run u joint shafts in it. If you put the ball & claw in with the u joint seals it will have a fair amount of slop in it.

I might have that vice versa but it just the seals. Order them for like 10 or 15 dollars apiece from one of the sites on this thread.

edit; I mean seal retainers when I said seals

The ball & claw are like this ___--- ---___ the u joint like this ______ ______
______ ______ ______ ______

Sort'a get the picture?

call red river parts and order inner axle seal retainers for ball and claw or u joint depending on what you run. the ball and claw ones are about 3/16 thicker. they sell the seal retainers with the new seals in them for about $25 each.
