ive heard for years how heavy rockwells are ... well now that i own a set i wanted to know for sure so while we were weighing out my buggy i decided to throw a scale under mine
the front rockwell with pinion brake all 5/16 link brackets and control arms mounted weighted 690
the rear with the same hardware weighted 560
in comparsion a d60 front weighes about 515

I personally find that to be surprisingly light. Thanks for getting that info (700 lb scales are hard to come by too). I would suppose a D60 front with hi-steer, beefy steering, and hydro assist pushes that value much closer to 600lbs (if the 515 was based on stock stuff).

Can you grab a few other measurements and possibly pictures?

One straight on from the front(axle) measure how high up to the top of the chunk.
Also what would the lowest point be if the diff bottom were shaved ?

To run small 38" tires, its really a hard choice.. If they had a better gear selection i'd be all over them.. The strenght is definitly a hugh advantage..

Does anyone make different gears? or anyone even talking about it??

sweet

buy the rockwells. you will be buying them anyways.

What is the ring gear diameter on a rockwell?

Reason I ask is that if the gear is bigger than the gear on a 60, there is no way it can have more clearance than a shaved 60.

Rocks aint about clearance per se

They are about brute strength.
Strength that can handle enough tire to well overcome the clearance issues.

They may not be portals...But stock they are as strong as the best built 60.

I dunno about all that. "Best" 60, or stock 60?

Throw alloys and CTMs at a 60, and you've got stock Rockwell beat. It's not exactly cheap, but it's certainly less :gay:

I've never heard of any rockwell gears or u-joints breaking-do a search on pirate.

Heard of plenty of 60 r&p break, housings break, knuckles break, and plenty of joints break.

Only weak spot is the shafts-easy fix.

Your right (of course) 60 is stronger.

ive heard of someone breakinga rockwell at devils playground. not sure what exactly they broke though.

Id say alloys, CTMs and all you would have a tie at best, but Id still take the Rocks.

Hell Bigfoot ran Rocks for years :flipoff2:
Never seen a monster on a 60; Not that we are in the habit of building Monster show trucks around here, but I have to think a 30' jump and land is pretty hard on shafts...Not to say Monster trucks never broke Rocks, but Im betting if 60s could be built stronger they would have been in.

Dont get me wrong Rocks arent the be all end all. But I hink they are better than built 1tons.

If cost is out of the equation,
I'd take Portals personally or Go with Rockwell F106s and use the PS115 Planetarys..but then I would be back to rockwells and we now all know they are :gay:

a rockwell with ouversons shafts is the stronger than any 60 u can build however the rocks are not 4 everyone i ran a 60 for three years without any breaks

I have some info here, haven't updated it in a while though.

49's Rockwell and a T18 so far 55mph is roughly 2000 rpm but having a lot of tire shake I havn't figured out yet.
Of course, tons of info on that pirate site.
