My engine started making a knocking sound today, i think it might be a rod. Any suggestions on how to check for sure, or somewhere inexpensive to get a new motor 99 xj

If it's an automatic, pull the inspection plate and tighten the flexplate bolts (of pull them one at time, brakeclean them, & loctite back in place) *BEFORE* doing anything else... those bolts being loose will sound like a bag of marbles in clothes dryer!

i ran the engine again this morning, i only hear the sound at idle. if it was a rod, wouldnt the knock continue through revving or intensify?

I was personally involved in a shadetree repair about 3.5 years ago that I cannot believe is still holding together. A buddy's trail rig had a knock. We removed the oil pan and found the offending rod. The crank had previously been turned down .030". We measured the bad journal, and it had worn down .010" to right at .040" under standard spec. We polished the journal, and installed a .040" under bearing on that one rod. The rig is still running today:lol:. The hope was that it would just live through one wheeling trip.
