I am planning on adding some gussets to my cage and have heard conflicting information. Is it better to have the gusset centered on the tube or off to the side? I have heard centered gussets can have a can opener effect, any truth to that theory in a real world application?

My knowledge to this is pretty useless but I could see how it would have an opening effect, and on the side leaves the other side weaker. I would think gussets on both sides would be very effective. Just my two cents, I'm sure some experts will have good answers lol.

What about a saddle gusset? Pretty simple to make if you have a press. Doesn't have to be a thick material, since the load goes through a radius.

Thats what I was going to suggest. I did some like that for a cage I built, AKA taco gussets.

AKA taco gussets.

Cheese and sour cream will never stay in that taco.

I dig the dimples, did you leave them open or weld tubes between the holes? Seem like they'd hold water/mud and a PITA to paint inside when done.

Thanks. I left them open. I thought about welding tube in there, but I was already taking too long on the project, so it had to move on. I did dust a bit of paint on the inside of the gusset before welding it on, but there are probably a few areas that are riding around paintless.

If your gonna do single gussets do them on the side, not in the center. Thats just what ove read and seen from the research ive done for my cage

Gussets never hurt a cage, no matter where you weld them. On the Race cars, we always centered them in the tube and welded both sides. Never a problem.

I like tube gussets better. I just like the look of 1" tube gussets on a cage.

I like the looks of jeepinmatt,s gusset. But, considerably more work than a tube gusset!

I think the positives of the gussets would far outweigh any possible chances of them tearing the tube.

Sent while I should have been doing something constructive...

Hole saw to drill the holes, dimple dies to dimple them. Custom press fixture I made (that I just remembered what its from, haha) to bend them. Nothing fancy, just a piece of 1.5" tube cut in half long ways and welded to some 1x2" bar stock to use in the upper half of my 24" press thingy, with 2 more pieces of bar stock bolted to the stationary bottom to curl it.

Seems like cup cars will use a double, “boxed” style gusset on the drivers side and a single gusset on the passenger (less critical) side. However, they’re fighting for all the weight ballast they can get.

I like jeepinmatts gusset from above!

A small piece of 1x2 mitered (or other obligatory size/shape) at an appropriate angle would be quick, easy, and strong for any node point.

I could cut you some gussets on my cnc table if you wanted some kinda cool design/personalized thing on em. hit me up if interested.

Saddle Gusset -SHIPPING INCLUDED

Pretty awesome product from a fellow wheeler. I was happy with it.
"Heres the kicker: Usually these are only available individually for around $12-$15 each for a 3x3 Saddle Gusset that is generically cut for 45 and 90 degree intersections.... Those really arent even angles that exist!"

I think he is saying is a typlical cage that actually follows the shape and flow of a rig, the angles at tube intersections are rarely 45/90
