so what is the strength loss form tubing bent using a "crush" method as opposed to mandrel?

I don't think there's a single rockcrawling rig that's ever been built using a mandrel bender, they're all bent using the "crush" method. If you mean a push through hf type bender, then if you modify it and take your time it can make plenty strong tubing. If you use the dies and rollers as they come from the factory they will oval the tube and make it quite a bit weaker.

Not sure the name of the type of machine, but I assume it is like what a muffler shop uses, puts lots of little kinks in the tube. Definetly not going to be very strong. The HF benders work OK as stated above, but not as good as any bender actually made for tubing (not pipe).

What are you putting a cage in Kevin? How's the baby?

babys great got one more on the way. got a 79 scout, and yes at the shop i work at we have a bendpack bender for doing exhaust work, it does not put little kinks in it, it is smooth and strong enough to bend very thick pip. With exhaust pip the inside of the bend is crushed in a little, thicker pip may not as bad. going to try it only cost me $17 for a stick of .095 just didnot know if it would make a BIG diff or not...thanks

Use .120 on it if you plan on ever wanting it to do something. .095 is strong enough w/ enough bracing, but there is not normally as much bracing on a trail rig as is on a NASCAR.

I think the "crush" you are talking about is going to be fine, and like you said, it probably won't be as bad with thicker tubing.

Congrats on the baby!
