I want to put a roof section on the jeep roll cage. Something to aid in the event of a roll over, in the even i go wheeling :flipoff2:, keep the top from sagging..

1) 1/8 thick expanded steel (rolled flat)
and
2) 1/8 solid aluminum...

Some things to consider..
I have both on hand. I generally keep a bikini top on the jeep at all times as I hate being in the direct sun. I have enough head room so i won't be close to either.

Ideas ?????

I think the expanded metal would offer more protection from something poking thru in the event of a weird roll over where something could come in between the cage and hit your noggin. You can weld it many places and make it pretty rigid. The aluminum would look good though.

My vote goes for solid Al. Then you wouldn't NEED the bikini top. It also reflects the heat better, and doesn't tear as easily when it rubs on trees.

The reasons I say the expanded metal is :

the way you connect the aluminum will always be the weak point, because of it riping out. Corrosion, and it's solid.

With the expanded metal you can get some daylight if you wanted, through the top on if you want shade or cover from rain. The expanded metal might bend if a rock tried to come through, but, it will stay intact . Also, the expanded metal or the aluminum won't connect to the windshield so you would still need the bikini if it rains.

My thoughts, but everyone thinks different.

yeah, but if you polish the aluminum, you would be visible from space on a sunny day.

keep the opinons comming thats exactly why i posted it...

polished..... hmmmm that means i'd have to back it out of the garage !!

I would go aluminum.
Offers some rain protection and then bikini top could disappear.

One thing I would worry about with the expanded metal would be snags or things hooking it. Of course it could also provide some utility as a place to hang stuff.

Enough pros cons maybe a cant go wrong situation

Aluminum....and make it as big as the bikini top....no bikini top needed.
Expanded steel mesh will eat up the flappin' bikini in the wind. The Aluminum will keep you dry, the expanded steel will leak like a sieve  .
Either polish for bling or paint for match.

Matt

i vote solid al. gives shade, rain protection & birds cant crap on your head, no need for bikini anymore

BACON :flipoff2:

I vote for the polished solid aluminum, that way you could cook bacon on the roof in the sun!

Definitely go solid. Also, if the condition of that cover is the biggest thig you have to worry about after a roll over you're definitely more hard core than I am.

if you run that bikini top with the expanded metal under it... add any kind of wind/speed and i think the vibrations would end up cutting the canvas. I could be wrong...never done it.

I would go with the solid AL

Solid aluminum or tread plate.

Whatever you go with I would have it mounted with some type of quick disconnect and try to make it rattle free.
