Finally getting around to building the roofskin for my cage. What thickness Aluminum are you guys using? I was thinking 030. Also should i crimp the edges? What are using to fasten to the cage? Ive seen several with tabs welded on and 1/4" button heads. I have a nutsetter tool and was thinking about drilling directly into the tubing and using threaded inserts 1/4". Would that be a bad idea?

I used somewhere around .030 aluminum because I wanted to shape it some. I used tube to make the main brace over my head so it isn't an open span. We welded on 1x3/16" steel all around the edges and then drilled 1/8" holes and used aluminum rivets. I sealed it with silicon so it wouldn't drip on me when it rains. Took forever and half dozen drill bits, but result is awesome and I did a hard roll on the lid right onto some rocks last weekend. Dented up the top, but no punctures.

I have some 16ga aluminum to use. I wasn't expecting to crimp the edges. I think the 16ga would be a good compromise to shield you from any elements, rocks, etc. and be light enough not to make it easy to handle and work with.

I have some small tabs made from 1/8" steel that I welded on every foot or so and just used self tapping screws. I may change those to pan head #12 screws with a lock nut in the future if the threads keep stripping out.

Cool, thats what i wanted to hear. Im sick and tired of gettin soking wet everytime i go out so this will be done soon. Ive also thought about building it out of fiberglass. I have done numerous projects so ill try it first. I think i can make the edges look better with fg.

I sunk mine between the bars just a little so the top of the aluminum is flush with the top of the tube and took a file to the rough edges.
