Rooting a cellphone???

Have any of you young guys/gals got the know-how of rooting a cellphone? I am very happy with my old android phones, but I am sure sick of Google and all the BS apps that go along with it. What I do know... it mainly takes a Windows computer... I am strictly Linux, and there are few options for rooting with Linux. Just fishing for now.

What phone do you have? I rooted my old Samsung S4 and it was much better afterward.
