My father in law is putting a playground in for my nieces at my brother in laws house. He is wanting to use rubber mulch for under and around the area. Anybody have any experience with it? Any idea on the best places to buy?

I have it around at my house around a fire pit. Horrible idea cause if anything gets out of the fire pit it goes up in flames quick and smells like a burnout. Previous owner of my home did it. It does not fade too bad, and doesn't break down at all like real mulch. Not sure where he bought it though. It would be great for a playground. Put a good 10-15mil plastic down and it won't have weeds hardly at all compared to mulch.

Rubber mulch is ideal for a playground. It doesn't decay, helps block weeds, isn't dirty, and much softer if they fall. Try to get the smaller pieces vs big ones, like 1/2" cube.

We just put some down on the new playground at my church. I believe it was ordered online through a place in PA. Was ~$10 per 50lb bag. Not sure if If you can get it local.

Dollywood has it around trees usually 4x4 foot areas. They torched it lightly on the surface to bind it and keep it in place.

It's hot in the summer sun. Otherwise I think it's a good choice.

I've had friends that have used it around their kids' playgrounds.
The one thing you have to look out for is what kind of yard degree you usually have in the area. E.g. if its an area that gets a lot of small leaves that fall in, or pine needles, or grass clippings blown into it, it's kind of a pain to maintain. Depending on the debris you can lightly blow it of w/ a leaf blower.
I would think if you get red instead of black it wouldn't be as hot during the summer.
