I run a 5K 4-5 times a week, I am working up to a 10k and it's time for better quality.

I have tried the asics & sketchers. They seem to be alright, I am curious about what you guys like. Anybody recommend a good running shoe?

New balance 930s.
Im a big boy, they prevent shin splints and at the end of a run my muscles are tired not my joints.

Nike Free Runs for me. Both my parents do iron mans and marathons very regularly. They also make sure to run 3-4 miles a day religiously. We like Nike. I don't think it's more so brand specific, but rather what shoe supports you the best and what not.

My idea of a good running shoe is more of a hiking shoe. In that case, Merrill. Particularly the chameleon 4. Toughest I've ever owned and did some work out west. Did many many miles of dry rocky trail and a good 30 miles of running (a week).

And it varies from brand to brand. New Balance makes neutral shoes (the 1080), but most of their line is designed for various levels of pronation.

Matched? To the shoe?

Jeff I just went through this last week. Being a big guy my shoes were not supporting me. They had me run on a treadmill for 30sec while someone filmed my feet. They are looking at PRONATION. My feet were severe over pronation which means my feet roll inward as I run. They then recommend a supported shoe. I tried one on then ran again. Wow night and day difference. I went with the ASICS fortitude 7. I had ASICS before but just had the wrong style. Also brooks are a great shoe, but they didn't have anything wide enough in stock for me to try.

What stores will do this? Specific sporting stores, like Dicks or Sports authority?

Nah you are going to have to find a specialized running shoe store.

Check to see if you have a Fleet Feet by you, great speciality running store that can help with picking out the exact right shoe for you. No one shoe works for everybody, and just asking for opinions won't help a ton since you don't know the style of your foot.

That said, I don't run a ton so I just use some normal Nike running shoes, but I know some of the people here at Fleet Feet and also know a lot about them from doing an MBA project on them with the executive team.

Found one in Huntersville, Birkdale village I'll be headed there this week as time allows. Thanks!

I've seen these work.

I'm glad you posted this, my ankles always hurt after a long hike or a run. Probably my reason for not running as much as I'd like. (I'm lazy too) looks like I'll be looking for one of these places near me.

Run For Your Life is where I go. You will see a huge difference when a pro properly matches shoes to you. Every time I've been, They watched me run in at least 4-5 different sets of shoes to find which one works.

I went to the Dr. on Friday. When the nurse was taking my vitals she said my heart rate was low. Then she asked if I run a lot. I told her yes & she said that's why. My Father had heart issues, when my daughter was born she had to have heart surgery the same day. I am all about cardio exercise & being aware of what I eat.

However, I have many lazy days. Preferably Sunday afternoon with a organic chocolate beer & a hunk of rotisserie pork from Ingles :smokin:

I should do better than I do. I have cholesterol issues myself and take a statin for it. I seriously think I would do more running/walking if I could find a set of shoes that didn't make my ankles feel like they were going to explode. I've tried so many shoes Asics, Nike, Puma, etc. I'd never heard of pronation till this thread. I'm going to check out a couple places too... Thanks

You know, if you can't run, walk at a good pace. Studies show walking is just as good as running. The most important thing is getting your heart up. If you can work up to 45 minutes a day or as often as time allows. I would bet a 6 pack of fine craft beer your cholesterol goes down your dick goes up and your wife smiles more often:rolleyes:

+1 on Run For Your Life. I still hate running but they made it not hurt.

Think of running shoes like cars/trucks. One manufacturer, many models, from trucks to cars.

Nike makes various models only one might be good for you.
Same with brooks, asics, and the rest.

Don't get caught up in the brand and don't buy them for looks. Buy them for your foot and gait.

Only a running store will have the tools to help you.

That being said I loved my asics gel nimbus 16s.
