This was as crazy as it gets.
Just thought I would share
My wife and I flew to Spain this summer to participate in San Fermin: The Running of the Bulls.
The Party:
It was an experience like nothing else. Picture Mardi Gras x 1000. Biggest party in Europe, Pamplona's population grows from 250,000 to 1.5 million that week. We were up for 40 straight hours before the run- dancing, drinking, yelling, and nearly fighting with some Australians (biggest trash talkers I have ever met). I ran into several Americans- all from the academies (Navy, Air Force, Army). Nudity, public pissing, drunks singing, bands playing on every corner- it was pretty much awesome. They do this for 7 straight days, I have no idea how. We were dead tired after just two.
The Run:
It was kind of odd, walking around that night all I heard was people yelling and cheering in Spanish, but during the run, all I heard was yelling and screaming in english.
They run 12 1200lb bulls each day for 7 straight days (8 fighting bulls and 4 steer). The streets are narrow and it is mostly up hill. The route is 1/2 mile long and the first bull finishes around 1:50 seconds.
I ran on the first day, which is usually the most crowded. There were so many people crammed in the streets that my arms were pinned by my sides. Before the run started I was looking around me and thought- there is no place to go, when the bulls round the corner, everyone is going to get trampled.
Sure enough, that is exactly what happened. Human dominos.
On my run, the bulls seperated themselves into two groups- the first 8 missed me by about 3 feet or so, not considered close. The second group of 4, which was about 7 seconds behind the first group, missed me by about 6 inches.
I finished with only a couple of scratches, but that was not the case for dozens of others. Hundreds had cuts and bruises and 23 people went to the hospital from my run, including a guy who was gored straight through the back. He was listed as "grave" in the papers, but I think he survived.
Video:
I thought would share the video! This is from the second day. It wasn't nearly as crowded, but still pretty crazy! Since you you can't have cameras while you are running, we recorded the run from the second day on live TV.
