found some rust under my old xj its a 98 was wondering if i can use anything to defeat the rust and portect the area
any ideas?

The correct way to remove rust is to remove it by the least abrasive means possible.
A wire brush and some light grinding should do the trick be careful not to go to deep with the grinder so you don't compromise the integrity of the component your working on.
Then protect the bare metal with something like POR-15 or a quality rest preventative paint. Regular spray paint will just mask the problem.
The cancer will return if you don't properly protect against it.

if you wanna remove the rust just sand it down or sand blast it.
if you wanna create a paintable surface that looks good and clean...go to www.eastwood.com that have several stuff that can help you out.
for your situation i would use eastwoods rust converter, it creates a chemical bond with the rust and primes/adheres on it without any chipping, and after that it would be good for a paintable surface....you can also try eastwoods rust encapsulator(spelling) check out the specs on the web site.
goodluck.

eastwood originally use to sell por-15 WAY back in the day, they have now updated to better and more easy working products that produce better results...
