safety inspection question...

i just got my certification here in hickory nc and i was told by two ase master techs (one level2 and one lvl 1) both own their own shops in hickory and they said if it is in the drivers "normal" field of vision it should be failed but they usually pass them trying to help the avg joe out in a tuff spot unless it is very noticble or they give they a hard time about tint or other junk. they showed us pictures like these

I went to get my '01 TJ inspected this morning and I was told they couldn't do it because my inside rearview mirror was not installed (it fell off the windshield about two weeks ago). I told them I thought I only needed 2 out of 3 mirrors and my driver's side and passenger's side mirrors were installed. They pulled the book and it states for a truck you only need 2 out of 3. For a car you need all 3. Because the book did not specify Jeep in the 2 out of 3 rule, they told me they'd have to fail me for it. So I told them forget it and left. Guess I'll replace the mirror and try again next week...:shaking:

Federal DOT says two non-distorting mirrors.
When I have the doors off I put one home made mirror on the drivers side hinge. Never had any trouble.
Many cars and SUV's the passenger side is distorting.

The wording in the book the tech showed me said nothing about non-distorting. Only said 2 out of 3 for trucks and all 3 for cars.

Same here, I took one of the mirrors off our old f-350 (been sitting for 3 years) and welded it to a little bracket that mates to the hinges when the doors are off. Never been stopped by the cops, never tried to get it inspected with the doors off tho.

If they are gonna be dicks about the rearview, get some 3m sticky pads and put it back up. Its only gotta hold up while they're looking at it.

Edit: Just to be clear, I don't mean post-it notes, I mean those foam pads they make for sticking hooks to the walls, etc.

NC does not care if a windsheild is cracked or broken as long as the wipers will clear it.

Not all 100 counties in NC are emissions counties only 48 of them are.

Even with a safety only inspection all the OEM emissions equipment must be present and working.

Mirrors a vehicle with a GVW of less then 8500lbs must have the drivers and inside rear view mirror unless the rear window is blocked by permanent fixture(small moving truck box) then it must have both drivers and passenger mirrors.

Back up lights are not required to be present or work.

I just got to re certify for both my OBD and safety licenses. I really do hate doing inspections.

Go a parts store and spend the 3-5 dollars for the mirror kit. Comes with the cleaner and glue.

reverse lights can not be on while the car is in drive. the windsheild ive always done and have been told that if it will catch your finger nail it fails. Im kinda easy you could say... if I wouldnt fell safe riding in it the i will fail it. also I have heard that SC will start the inspections sometime in the near future...
