Hey,

2 semi-related questions:

1) saw you buy a vehicle/motorcycle with a salvage title and you want to apply for a new "clean" title. What do you have to do? costs?

also, any comments on buying a motorcycle with a salvage title? seems like 50% of the bikes forsale out there have a salvage title. things to inspect prior to purchase??

2) say you want to buy a vehicle to sell for parts. what do you do with the title? do you still get the title changed into your name? what about taxes, etc?

thanks,
bigmac

biggest thing you want to look at on a salvage bike is for frame cracks an that the forks are straight. even then, it's a bit of crapshoot because the front end could be slightly tweaked and you'll have issues at higher speeds.

There is no such thing as a clean title after one has been tagged as salvage...it's salvage forever (at least in this and MOST other states). Most bikes running around with any kind of age or miles on them have been involved in something that under insurance guidlines would have deemed them salvage. I dropped my 916 and trashed the side of it and it was close to being a total loss as far as the insurance co.was concerned. Look for obvious things ; tweaked forks, any fork tune damage, any frame damage, large gouges anywhere on the swingarm. Don't let scraped cases scare you off of roughed up body work. If I'm buying a salvage one I'd perfer to see before and after repair pics if there are any. If you plan on keeping it for a good while then I'd buy a salvaged one,if not the resale on a salvage bike is sometimes tricky because lots of people are afraid of buying them and the bank doesn't like loaning $$$$ on them. But if you're paying cash, I've bought some really nice stuff for cheap because of salvage titles.

what do you do with the title? usually the scrap yard will want it before they will crush whats left.
do you still get the title changed into your name? not if your going to strip it.
what about taxes, if you dont put it in your name , then how can you get taxed ????????
this is just what im guessing though .

I've scrapped about 4 different vehicles at two different salvage yards and never had them ask for a title? I guess it just depends where you take it, the places I've scrapped at were in Garner and Statesville.

I've parted and scrapped about 15 trucks in the last 2 years. The yard never ask nor would they get a title from me. And if they did give you some hassle just cut it up into small pieces.

you turn the title in to the dmv and inform them it's been scrapped.

Salvage Titles Really depend on how the state handles them.
Almost everything I own has a salvage Title. I have been rebuiding them for years.

For example all of the cars I brought from California when I moved out here had Salvage brand on the titles. When I got the new NC titles the Salvage Brand was gone. Now if I were to run a CARFAX on them it would still show the salvage brand(if it ever did because carfax is not as accurate as people think)

The scrap yard that I go to takes the vin# and my Name address and DL # and that is it.

If you have never put them in you name then you will not be taxed. if they are in your name then turn them in to DMV.

There are some states that will let you apply for a clean title. NC is not one of them.

Some States Like Washington and Nevada only Issue a Bill of sale and if that is taken to a different state to be registered it might or might not be a Salvage.

i think thats what the yard does with the titles where my junk goes to. but if i dont have one , they still take it and they dont ask for anything like my dl # . but im sure everyone of them has their own way of doing it.

Hey,

what does it take to get insurance on a bike that has a salvage title?

are you sure NC doesn't allow you to apply for a clean title after a vehicle has been repaired?

I think the second paragraph mentions something about it, but doesn't give much detail. ???

Thanks,

i think you can get a salvage rebuilt title, but it's still going to be branded. as it should be, i personally don't want to be buying anything that's been deemed a total loss in the past without knowing. carfax is a joke for the mostpart.

i believe you can also get a form from the dmv stating you no longer own the vehicle or it's been scrapped if something is titled in your name and for whatever reason you don't have the title any more.

as for bike insurance, i think there are some companies that won't allow comprehensive on a salvage bike but will still give liability. others give you whatever. comprehensive cost can often exceed the value of the bike anyway.

I have never had an insurance company ever ask if it was salvage. and have allways been paid KBB for them when they get totaled again.
