ok guys im lost on this one. i have a 1988 samurai with a 1.6 8v tracker motor in it. it has the clicky starter fix kit on it as well. installed a winch on sami two days ago everything worked fine winch worked and sami started right up. installed new Optima Yellowtop battery today number D34/78-950 this battery is dual post 750cca 870ca deep cycle battery. after install sami fired right up no hitch about it ran winch test run all was good. shut it off turned back on it fired up again. third time i tried to crank it it made a squil and grinding type sound hard to explain and did not even turn over but sounded like starter motor was turnin. when i let off key it winded down in just a few seconds(2 or so). turned key over again and it fired up. now tried to move it to trailer and its doin nothin but making that same noise and not turning over...is this a starter issue not engaging? if so could it be because of the new battery? some wire i need to check? lost guys thanks for help in advance.

It could be bad teeth on the flywheel not allowing engagement. It could be worn teeth on the starter doing the same. Try putting it in gear and rolling it a little. Doesn't take much. Get it to a different spot on the flywheel and try it then. It could also be the starter being dirty and not allowing the gear to throw out completely. Which starter did you end up using?

could also be the ''clicky starter problem'' most sammys have. check out trailtough.com and lowrangeoffroad.com for more info and parts

The flywheel is only a month old and the starter is a used spare I had laying around I been using since I put flywheel in. It's for the 1.3 I believe. I had rolled it about ten feet and did the same thing.

Are you sure you can use the 1.3 starter on the 1.6? I'm not sure about any of that, so just asking. I've got a 1.6 16v, and it has the starter that came with that motor.

itsa 1.6 8v motor block is same as 1.3 just taller i believebut i have had them both and believe they both work as far as starters. i like the looks of the 1.3 because it appears the throw on it is longer to engage.

Ok new question! Took the starter off today to replace/inspect. Starter looks fine teeth look good and all. Flywheel on other hand looks like crap! Top of teeth are chewed off all the way across. This flywheel was just purchased and installed in dec along with new clutch. Any reasons this happened?

Because you're using a 1.3 starter on a 1.6 motor. That's why I asked. They don't engage fully unless you do some grinding. Don't ask me where, I'm not sure. I do know that it will grind your flywheel if you don't get it to engage properly or use a 1.6 starter. Try switching to that and see if it starts working again.
