I'm starting to think my samurai might have jumped a notch on the timing belt or had a belt put on it wrong since the craigslist ad did say "new timing belt". I'm just trying to get it where i can play with it a little before i put the 1.6 in, mainly trying to gather up all the parts and information i need before pulling my motor out. if anyone knows a easy way to check the timing belt on the 1.3 with out tearing everything apart i sure would appreciate the info

To check it all correctly you have to pull the plastic timing belt cover.
There is a mark on the crank pulley that should match up with a mark on the block or oil pump or what ever is there. Easy to see.
Match them up and then a mark on the cam pulley will either be straight up or straight down.
I can't exactly remember .... been a while since I've done it.
Then, I think the rotor button should be pointed at #4 plug.

Put a timing light on it. If you can't get it dialed into 10° BTDC with the distributor, then either you're timing's off or the crankshaft keyway is wallowed out. Both common problems. At that timing, the distributor should be about halfway through it's travel. If you have to run it all the way one way or the other, then it's time to start pulling stuff apart and find out why.
