I'm going to pick up my project truck today, 87 or 88 samurai with knock in the motor, I've been debating on putting a 4.3 in it or tryin to find a turbo 4cyl and put in it just want to see what everyone else thinks

4.3 is too heavy for a Samurai.

Stick with a 4cyl. Sidekick/Tracker 1.6 8v or 16v motors are the most popular swaps.

A stock wheel based Sami with a 4.6 can be great fun ..... for others to watch. IMHO, from watching them wheel, they seem to be a very unbalanced rig. Just my 2 cents.
Now for the street .... it could be loads of fun to drive.

I have often wondered about putting the small GM V6 ( 2.7 er 2.8 ?) that was in the S10 trucks.

It's ONLY 145hp er so .... more than double that of a Sami.

If you are going through that much trouble just do a 3800 or 3800sc swap!!!!

The kit makes it easier, but it can be done without it.
The FI will probably be the best way to go, but to do it right you need to replace the fuel tank, all the fuel lines, etc, etc.
But it can be done cheap too.
The options are A Weber kit, or a CV ( Harley Davidson ) carb set-up. Both are workable but have their own quirks.

I normally refrain from direction people from one BBS to another, but a good place to go is Zuwharrie.com and do some looking around.

It's simply the no.1 place on earth to get Samurai info.

everything i read on here says the 16v engine I have won't work without being fuel injected. The more I look the more I think I should stick with a carb

Go to Zuwharrie.com and PM beekiller. I think he's running a 1.6 with a CV carb. It might have a 1.3 head.
But he can tell you. It does take a lot of extra work to do a CV carb. I think the CV carb will have fuel flow issues on a 1.6
If ... IF the 1.3 head will be a bolt on fit, then it'll make it easy to run a Weber.
But yeah, I agree with the 1.3 and carb thing .... but when the stock carb goes .... more trouble shows up.

Snappy, Why a 3800? just curious.

I can't help but to ask about the gears in the sidekick, they're supposed to be 512 if i'm understanding everything right, and the front will fit the samurai front and rear? i still don't understand that but why not put the whole rear axle from the sidekick under the samurai?

As a general rule.......
Manual trans....5.13
Auto trans.......4.62
You can run the complete Kick rear axle but its wider. Most people run a hybrid housing like the one in this link.

If you have found a 16v just do the complete install and be done with it........fuel injection is way better than carbs. Samurai carbs run great or suck. I have a friend that builds the adapters and does the wiring harnesses.

I have the 16v sitting in my shop floor, along with the wiring harness, just got the complete harness out last night, now im debating on if i want to try to rewire it myself or send it off, either way i have to buy the adapter kit though. I've done quiet a few remote starts and think i have the general idea of how to make it work.

Matt, if you remember I put a 3800SC in one and it was FAST. Around 280hp after the mods in a 2700lb vehicle is fun. The guy I did it for DD it and loved it until his wife wrecked it in the rain. They are alot lighter than the 4.3 and a shorter block makes it easier to install.

I've got the 1.6 16v motor in mine with the fuel injection. You definitely want to keep the EFI. The wiring harness was reworked by Trail Tough, and it wasn't very expensive, and makes the wiring job just a matter of minutes once you get your engine installed. I'm running the Petroworks engine swap kit, and it does not require a body lift on the front like some others because it sets the engine lower in the chassis. I used the stock Samurai fuel tank and fuel lines with an E2000 external fuel pump. My motor has been in and running for a few years now with no problems. I absolutely love it. You go from 60hp to 100hp. It is a huge difference. I wouldn't fool with changing differential gears. Just get a set of the lower transfer case gears that suits your tire size best. They correct the high range as well. I'm running the 6.5:1 TC gears with 34" LTB's, stock 3.73 diff gears, and love them.

Any more questions, just ask.

Danny

I just looked up the schematic on the tech support site we use for remote starts, I'm 99% sure I can trace the harness down and rewire it myself. I know for sure if I wasn't changing vehicles with the harness, I could make it crank off a remote in an hour or so.....I will let everyone know how that works out for me......

Im wanting a samurai as well, ill be watching this thread to see whatcha do. Personally, I want to run propane. Sparkn89 - propane with a turbo?!? Im even more intrigued! Fill me in!

it's been about a year but I got the Sami fever again last week, motor is in wiring harness is almost all the way integrated, fuel pump shouldbe here tomorrow, hopefully in the next few days i'll hear it run.....
