What a great present! After I got a welder so many options for DIY projects just unravel and money savings begin i.e. cost to build a rear swing out tire carrier vs. buying one. For beginners, flux core is convenient but man gas and normal wire make such a difference! Also don't cheap out on the welding mask, its hard to weld when you can't quite see what you are doing. I bought a hobart discovery series mask with a rechargeable battery for around $100 at the Northern Tool in Colfax and still works like the first day I got it three years later.

I have learned a lot from this youtube channel. While it is not going to make you a welding pro, the instructor in the video can explain a lot of beginner's errors and good practicing skills.

Good Luck

If you were closer I could help you out getting started. My first suggestion is to get some scrap and burn up all that flux core sample they give you. Once you get good with that go pick up your c25 bottle and some solid wire and do some pretty welding. Work on your technique with the flux core and you will be blown away on how your gas shielded welds look

I always have things to weld to my jeep

I will shoot you a PM after New Years and give it a go. I live next to the GSO airport. Make sure you have the proper electrical hook ups before anything else!

x2 the flux core they usually give you is not all that, but good for practicing.

If you want to drag it up to Pfafftown some time,I'd be happy to let you hook it up and burn some steel at the shop. I have a few different auto-dark helmets you can try, too. Personally, I love my Miller. And if you're feeling ambitious, I might even throw you the TIG torch!

The flux wire will weld slightly thicker material and is good to weld outside in windy conditions or on dirty steel. Practice with it and then go gas. I have a 220 welder in my shop with gas and still have a 110 machine that has flux wire for dragging outside or to someones house.
