I told y'all a few months ago about my dog being an escape artist. After his time away in July, I bought a GPS tracker for him. It has alerted us a couple of times when he as gotten out of the dog lot (and just gone around to the front porch to wait for us to come home).
Today, we had gone to a Christmas concert, and while waiting for it to begin, I got a text message that Blaze had gotten out. Checked the tracking, and within a few minutes, he was over a half mile from the house, already the other side of 4-lane US-1. He was off in a wooded area, so we went by the house and I put my walking boots on, and we drove off to find him. Using my smart phone, I can ping the GPS, and it shows on the map where he is. I drove over near him, and started walking towards where he was. He was moving, staying a long way ahead of me. Not sure if he was in ear-shot or not. Ended up walking a couple of miles back and forth thru the woods, and finally called my wife to bring the car around to a nearby subdivision. I'd been at the car a couple of minutes, and he came out of the woods, and right up to us. It was nice knowing where he was, and which way he was heading.
For folks around Sanford....he started at our place off Pendergrass road in Tramway. Crossed US-1 to the Highway Patrol station, then off thru that old neighborhood to the S. side of Carthage St. Then into the woods and fields, behind the 105.5 station, to the McSwain Ag center on Tramway Road, up to Firetower Road, then finally ended up at Carthage Colonies near Carthage St. He did almost 5 miles total.
Anyway, the GPS is a Garmin GTU-10. Well worth it if you have an escape dog. Paid for itself today, in not worrying or having to wait for a call.
He got hurt a little...few cuts and scrapes, mostly from getting thru the fence, and his left front knee is all swollen up and won't take weight. Talked to his vet, probably a tendon issue, taking him in the morning to get that checked out. ($$)
As for me...my right ankle has been screwed up the past few months and I've been taking it easy. The cross-country walk has it aggravated and hurting. I'm self-medicating with Lonerider Sweet Josie.
