Saving to spend...

Read an article on this a few weeks back, and I had to laugh because it really described me...

I'm constantly looking for ways to reduce expenses... change to a cheaper calling plan, use coupons, etc... But my motivation isn't to put money in the bank, it's so I can spend it on other stuff...

Examples..
I'm currently trying to find $12 a month that I spend, that I could reduce.. which would pay for the monthly subscription to Sirius...

Want to convert my Dodge to run on veggie oil so the fuel money I would normally spend can partially go into a "fix the truck" fund, but MOST of it would be to cover a motorcycle payment... :D

Anyone else think like I do, or am I still just a financial "kid" in that regard?

edit: before it's asked, yes, I'm saving for retirement and the like, so my toys aren't at the expense of that..

I do that to..I will cut out food expenses so I can buy beer :flipoff2:

i'd rather have parts in the mail than food in the fridge anyday!

I think my dogs eat better than me.

I do the same crap. Sold the TJ to make room in the budget to build a trail only rig. Of course then I found a good deal on something else so I snagged it up. Now I am dumping tons of money into it so that I can get shop space to build the trail rig. But then I won't have any money left. I can't say that I cut anything out to save money. I couldn't tell you how much money is in my account with any accuracy unless it is every other thursday after midnight when my check clears.

cancelled my directTV to save a little (only time i watch TV is to get the news)
cancelled the house phone (the cell is always on)
eat at home, and pack a lunch as often as possible (found out i was eating out waaay too much)
save all my spare change (i think everyone does this, just think to look in the cushions)

and somehow i'm still broke... damn beer and jeeps, damn you to hell!

X2!!!!
When I was in college, i thought of everything in terms of cases of natty and packs of camel lights!

Does it ever end? I keep looking for that light at the end of the "want tunnel", With each hobby I throw myself into when the light starts appear..it's time to throw money elsewhere. With each major purchase, after saving or wheeling and dealing to pay for it, I feel like the end has got to be near, then something else peaks my interest and more funds are required. I figure I work to pay my bills, I work HARD to have cash for my hobbies. It's got to be better than sitting on the couch and watching life from the outside. And like my old man has always said (usually after making some expensive uneccessary purchase) "Son, I hope you spend my last dime paying for my funeral".

whats that about? ohh the beer comment and underage user, I believe you should be allowed to drink at 18 if you are not a dumbass and get in cars and drive drunk, be an idiot, vandalize things when ur intoxicated or be a jackass. I know some 25 year olds that shouldnt be allowed to drink at all, cause they are dumb, they dont have any commen sense and they will get in a car drunk and kill someone..I am now off my soapboax and what I do behind closed doors doesnt involve anyone. I dont bring alcohol to trails, I dont wheel under the influence, you will never even see me drink. Period

Same here rich. I try and ebay/sell anything that i havent used in the past 5 minutes to fund things for the truck. I actually made myself laugh out loud the other day when i was making a list of things that would "finish" the truck......haha...right.

Josh

I built a kegerator cause I can get draft beer 2/3 cheaper than bottles..
Save change in car ash trays, in about 3 months or so I got about $75
Cut off insurance on credit card.. about $3 -$4 a month now..
No caller ID, 411..
No premium channels..
Try not to do silly computer upgrades.... only what is necessary....
Got a Shell MC to save 5% on gas...
Buy in bulk when I know I'm going to use the products.....
Cut my own hair...
refill my own ink cartridges...
Buy a lot of clothes at Marshalls, Rugged Wearhouse, Rosses, Ebay, Goodwill

But I spend good$ on tools.. my Jeep... my Dog..., firearms... and furnishings/ upgrades to my home, which I am all proud of

Another perfectly good thread down the toilet....

I dont think he was bragging...He just said he saves money for beer! I think we are a little too uptight here. He made an innocent comment - someone rolled their eyes at him (which is really none of their f**king business anyway) so he commented. If thats bragging, we are all guilty.

Sorry to get defensive, I just get frustrated with this stuff...

-back off topic--Holy crap Mike, it says right on the first page of this website that no underage drinking will be tolerated. But now you say its "really none of their f**king business". You say he just made an "innocent comment" but if someone made an "innocent comment" about doing some illegal wheeling behind the walmart, the mods would be all over it. I thinks the mods need to figure out which side of this they stand on.

Im not trying to be a pain or to start a bunch of crap, but don't say we can tolerate some rule breaking but not others.

As a side note, Yak, i don't care if you drink, this was honestly nothing against you. Just thought Mike's comments were slightly hipocritical.

yeah when you are poor you do things out of have to rather than want to. of course somethings are fun.
I do all my own builds except the 4 to 1's in my tcase, which I had Andy at CRS do for me. I fab my own parts or buy em cheap from Ebay or get em from the bone yard. Most of what I have to have help on comes from free labor from friends. ANd yes they get the favors back at some point. I know my rig isn't bling as some. BUt the ol gal goes pretty good, and I have a good time behind the wheel. That's the biggest place I save my bucks.
I might find a part here and there and sell it for a fair profit. I might seel something for someone else and make a little on the side. and that usually goes into my Jeep. Shop for grocerys at at discount places(this saves a bunch) Walmart, Sams, and suck have better prices usually. I try and keep up on things and what they go for so I know if it's a good deal. head out to the grocery store around 9:30 or 10 and buy meats that they mark down.
Keep my trips to town to a minimum. USe the wifes Honda when I can since everything else guzzles gas.
I was once taught when I first begin to manage restraunts, that if you watch the pennys, the dollars will take care of themselves.

To folks reading this forum, yes, its hypocritical...but its how I feel. I agree that responsible 18 year olds with a beer are much better than the drunk rednecks with rifles out there hunting every season. If because I am an admin I am obligated to post/idealize based on whats good for the board over my own actual belief, I will. But this struck me as something that needed to be said.

And i have no problem with what you just said, actually i agree with that. I guess it just didnt come across that way originally. But whatever, thats cool.

I have a friend who works for a bank so he knows almost EVERYTHING about money. He says you should deffinitely open a financial planning office, cause thats the hot ticket these days. I bet it would be a GREAT business and you would make a TON of money!!!!!!!!!!! :huggy: :driver: :smokin:

Usually for me it's - what spare jeep part can I sell to get a new cooler part! Thank god for the internet. It's so easy to sell my spare CJ parts online on JU for a rediculous price! LOL:D

If he knew everything about money, he'd be self-employed. :flipoff2:

Follows my same logic as listening to a financial planner who works for a company - if he was that good, he'd be semi-retired..

I wanna listen to someone who is 40 and retired.. :D

no doubt, most of my friends who are planners have less $$$ than I do, why would I want to suddenly trust them with my cash? If you're that good you should be in pretty good financial shape yourself.
