Ok so the wife wants a flatfender so I have a cj3b tub a built small block chevy, ford hp 44 driver drop and 9" im looking for some ideas for auto trans and transfercase combo to get the sbc connected to the ford axles as of now im looking at using a 700r4 with np231c that I have on hand .I plan on stretching the wheel base an body a little
what is the shortest combo I will have a limited wheel base
What Is the strongest combo I like to over build junk
cost is a major concern were trying to keep the build price down like everyone
I like factory combos it cuts down on adapters/custom fab
What have y'all used successfully with v8s an 36"-38" tires

No flaming or hating here let's hear some ideas if I forgot some info let me know

change your axles out, 79' waggy axles, go passenger drop an. SBC, sm465, D18. this combo works well..

Get a 88 up Chevy 27 spline 241(they are dsd) do a SYE to shorten it up and use a factory 700R4/241-208 adapter to put it behind a Th350.OR you could use a Th350 with a dsd 231 from a S-10 using the factory 700/231 adapter and do a sye on the case. The 231's have two different planetary sets, one is a four roller, the other is a 6 roller just like whats in a 241.I built a 241/205 doubler and just used the front half of the 241,they are plenty strong.I have a fullsize blazer on tons w 42's.In five years not one problem.

302/c4/dana 20. Not to sound like a douche but if your "built 350" is the same as 90% of the other "built 350"s out there, then it probably isn't worth the hassle considering you're missing the rest of the drivetrain. Being that its a flatty and a sbf/c4/d20 is just about as light as you can get and pretty damn short...why not.?

That would work also, but a C4/dana 20 combo is hard to come up with, around here anyway. What else besides a shoebox bronco ran that combo??? How much weight diff are you thinkin that is versus a 350/350/241?? 200-300lbs????

38s + v8 pwr + dana 44 = shafts shitted out everywhere. 36s should be ok though. Honestly I'd run a 700r4/4l60e with a 241c. Cheap and easy to find.

I bet if you posted an ad in the wanted section you could find a few. It would be between 150-200lbs lighter and the distributor would be up front. Not saying that if I were building something from scratch that I would choose a sbf over sbc, but the flatfender is one of the few vehicles where a ford swap makes sense, especially with ford axles under it.

Well jeff I happen to already have a sm465/dana 20 bolted together behind my sbc the problem is wife wants an auto although I have tried a thousand ways to convince her otherwise

That's true im relying on the general light weight of the rig and my wifes conservative wheeling style

Ok if u look at my sig you will see im definitely a blue oval guy but I got a great deal on the motor im aware of the benefits of using the ford setup and if either of the 289's I had was in decent enough shape to assemble and run the conversation would be different .that being said my sbc is a mild build with corvette aluminum heads, roller rockers, mild cam but best of all it has less than a hundred miles on the build so it is pretty fresh no hating here I like both blue ovals and bow ties

Thanks for the info and suggestions guys if anyone has anything to add please feel free

tell your wife it's against laws of nature to install an auto in a flatty..

my sbc,700r4,atlas in the scrambler is OK, i have ford axles, passenger drop atlas. This combo wouldn't fit in a flattie, unless your cool with a mini driveshaft or direct drive :D

my yj is a SOA and has a ford 5.0, 4r55e, atlas with an 8.8 rear. I have a dana 30 front with and ARB and chromoly shafts on 37's and I haven't broken one yet and this yj isn't a mall queen.

IMO, the SBC/TH350/d300 is a great combo. check out NOVAK for your adapter needs and info.
