One point of good news for SC residents, is their 2019 tax, allows you to deduct the gas tax & other taxes paid, if you itemize your tax return. I believe you can deduct on two vehicles. Hold on tot your Receipts!

Does SC now allow to itemize State taxes if you do Standard deduction for Fed?
MD scrambled to allow that after the big Fed tax changes bc a lot more people will now not be itemizing.

And, holy moly that would be a lot of receipts to hold onto!

So from 2007 to 2015 I kept every fuel receipt for every tank I put in my VW Passat TDI. I also calculated the mpg for every tank. I'm still not sure why.

I reset my trip meter every time I fill up and check the mileage. Also not sure why...

That’s an easy one...if i typically get 300 miles out of mixed driving, I go all Stephen Hawking trying to figure out why I only got 297 miles out of this tank.

It's definitely an indicator of overall health...maybe that's why I do it. Makes sense.

Ive done that for 25 years. There was a time when i stopping writing it down, but with the new car i log every fillup. Now that we have fancy onboard crap i also reset the cars "average mpg" record every time and record that too, and compare to my own calculations based on the tank. It's interesting how different they can be.
In my prior car a drop in mpgs was almost always concurrent with the tire pressure being low.

I use fuelly.com to log mine. Still do it with all the vehicles, but I don't keep the receipts anymore, haha. I find that all of the onboard computers are optimistic. My truck is pretty darn close on good tanks/high mpg/easy driving. If it shows 19.0mpg, hand calc will be about 18.7mpg. However, if I drive it hard or am pulling a trailer, the deviation is greater, like showing 14.5mpg but actually getting 12-12.5mpg.

I’m not sure about all vehicles, but I know the owners manuals with mine that calculate mpg say even if you reset the mpg...it’s still normalized by the previous 500 miles. So if you drive easy for 500 miles and then the next 500 miles are hard driven miles, the mpg will be overstated...then if you drive easy the next 500 miles, they should theoretically be understated.

With my 2016, it seems it shows "real time" mileage, not the whole tank average. And when I reset the trip, especially towing, it starts out low mileage, as you would pulling off & getting up to speed. After 20 or so miles of cruise control, it will be up to optimum mileage. If I calculate the fill up / gallons, I'll be 1 to 1.5 gallons less per mile than the computer shows.

I don't do anywhere near as much driving these days as I used to. I now live 5 minutes from work I really only drive there and back and a little bit on the weekends. It used to be during the week I would drive all over North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia and tally up about 20,000 miles a year. I used to save all because of 1099.

That is good to know and I'll get back in the habit of saving my receipts. It really does help!

There was some deduction for 2018. I'd have to look again at the details but it was something like you can deduct the lesser of maintenance on your vehicle or the tax paid on the gas you buy (cents per gallon, not the full purchase price of the gas). I kept my receipts this year to see what difference it makes, but I'm not expecting much.

Did something change for 2019?

Here's a really easy way.
Get a spa If it credit card for gas only. Put nothing but gas on it .
Keep your cc statement.

Been doing it for 12 years for work purposes

For the rest of you people who don't live in Sharon, SC, the phrase "spa If it" means "specific"...
thank you I was sitting here wracking my brain on that one

reminds me of this

You should try Siri. She can't understand anything.

You know....my whole family cept me are Apple fans.
For me Apple's platform absolutely sucks. I even tried I just cant get used to it.

BUT they have 1 thing absolutely nailed. Thats their keyboard...at least for my fingers/way of typing. I will occasionally pick up one of the kids phones and send a message to a friend of theirs to screw with them..and everytime Im amazed at the keyboard. Nothing else. But that,
