School me on 50" UTV's

I've been toying with the idea of getting my wife and son a UTV so they can join me on the trails when I'm riding my dual sport moto.

I've done a bit of reading and it seems like 50" width is kind of a "standard" for limiting what can and can't access a trail. Is it similar to the law that says 16" barrels are safe, but 15.9" barrels require a tax stamp (I think these are the lengths anyways)? Meaning, what's the logic behind a magical 50" rule?

Next question. There a lot of internet debate about 50" being unsafe because of rollovers. I doubt my wife will see any great speed in this thing, so the turning sharply at speed which could lead to rollover, isn't really a concern for me. I'm more concerned about if the 50" width is a concern for an average user.

Any input on CF Moto? From what I can tell, they are Chinese made parts, built in Canada? A lot of dealers in my area seem to carry them. Again, I'm not looking for something to try and run Dakar with. I want something that my wife can get around trails on.

500cc or 800cc? Is electronic power steering important?

Thanks in advance for the input. I always appreciate NC4x4's users.

I would take the rollover thing with a grain of salt. I would be willing to bet a lot of those reviews come from Johnny "Howmuchamonth" Rzrowner that just wanted the cheapest one possible yet expect to be able to drive it like their buddy's Turbo1k.

i would go 800cc if possible. There is a big difference between the RZR 500 vs the reg. The smaller one is also built by another company for Polaris, and is available from them. IIRC, the 500s are 2wd only.

Polaris builds all their own stuff. You are thinking of arctic cat which is using kymco stuff and branding it as their own. The 570 RZR is same power as the old 800 they dropped from the lineup a couple years ago. You have 570-900-1000-1000 Turbo for RZR options now. I looked at all of them extensively and decided on the Honda Pioneer 1000-5 for the ability to ride 5 people or have a dump bed in the same UTV.

You are correct. I was thinking of the RZR 170 & Pitster Pro.

Friend of mine has the kymco 700 he likes it has run everything at Ure

Go get the Arctic Cat Trail.

It will do exactly what you are describing, also, get a warranty.

I looked at the CF Moto for a long time before deciding on the Cat, end of the day came down to parts availability and reviews.

By the way, ripping my Artic Cat 1000 around a race track was the most fun I ever had in 4 wheel drive. You'll love it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I measured the bed of the Toyota and it looks like a 50" would slip right in. Makes the prospect of buying a UTV for the family that much more realistic.

Here's a video of what really made me want to pick one up for the fam:

I'd never trade in the LRP, but would like to be able to bring the wife and son on the trails if they showed interest.
