So my dad and I want to dip our toes into the metal detecting arena. I am completely ignorant to what is a good one and what is needed. Anyone have any suggestions and/or advice?

My advice only bc my boss informed me of this fri with his $1400 detector. When/ if you plan to use at the beach, a lot of them will not work properly in wet packed sand even if they say beach friendly! All I have to add tho

Oh. Well the $40 one from harbor freight wouldn't not find a 100lb steel custom made pit that was about 1-1.5 feet down in sand that's for sure. Got VERY lucky and found it with a shovel.

If you wonder why a 100 lb fire pit was buried in a creek under 1.5 feet of sand, just ask @CasterTroy , he even has pictures of the excavation process.

Hf has its pros and cons I’ll say! Best tool I’ve bought from there is my bandsaw if you can adjust one properly I took my omnipro220 back bc of some bc error on screen and the fact the auto set was wack! Never knew they sold metal detectors tho.

There are clubs for this. I have a friend who is prez of one. Maybe hit one of those up and read some of their info.

as a "swinger" since 1995, I've got a few miles of hunting under my belt. Here are some questions we need answered.
1-what kind of hunting are ya'll interrested in doing. Are you going to just coin shoot in parks and beeches, relic like I do, what are your interrest.
2- when you answere that, then you can research what kind of machine to start with. What is your budget?
3-how much time you willing to devote to the hobby?

1) My dad has some land in Virginia with a couple old home sites, he wants so poke around and see what we can find
2) $300 is really the most I would like to throw at this
3) this will be an infrequent hobby unless I get addicted haha
