If all goes well, I will be bringing home a camper with a non-functional rooftop 15k btu vented AC unit.
It seems like these things are not really serviceable? (Most places will not seal and refill the refrigerant). Is there anything common to look at for repair or safe assumption that a 16yo unit is done?
Also, what do I need to look at for replacement units, will any vented 15k unit go in its place (as in, an industry standard)?

There are usually used, slightly used ones on market place. Different models, high/medium/low profile, with /without heat. As far as the ducted/no-ducted, not sure if there is any difference. i assume my AC units are original ( 20 years old) so I have been scoping out replacements just in case one or both shit the bed.

Just like a refrigerator, they are sealed systems and meant to be replaced not serviced. You could of course buy a piercing valve or braze a service port into it but there isn't much info out there on servicing them. Besides unless you know where it's leaking from and can fix it what's the point,. And just like a fridge as inexpensive as they are it's not worth it to have one fail.

: Edit: but if you want to give it a try and you think low refrigerant is the cause and aren't great at brazing, this is the easiest way to tap into the system https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PWXVWSQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LMTkFb79XJNR6. I would suggest filling it with nitrogen and finding the leak first.

My neighbor does HVAC for a living and added his own service ports so it could be done when needed. If you know someone who knows how to do it it’s an option.
First I would check for simple things like fuses, contacts, control board.

After that, you can just get a new unit for reasonable price, and installation is a breeze with an extra set of hands.

Pull the plastic vent cover off the ceiling and there should be a sticker up in there that will tell you the manufacturer and model, buy a new one, R&R. Be done.

I'm going to be installing a mini split in my camper. I love how quiet they are and the low amperage draw they have, especially on startup. My only fear is if they can handle the vibrations of a camper.

We've installed several on trailers that NASCAR teams use for promotions at races. Never had a issue due to vibrations. Just make sure the condenser is somewhere to get good airflow and if you use a generator, make sure its clean power.
