I have a distributor seal leaking so just incase I screw something up I thought this would be a great excuse to get a timing light (Don't think I'll need it, but I don't care). Anybody wanna educate me on these please?

$25 light will do all you ever need.
All it does is picks up the flux field from the plug firing (same princiapl as an Amp clamp BTW) and fires a light.

The strobing effect of said light will be rythmic with the rotation of the engine.

You will repeatedly light up the same spot...

when installing the distributor, make sure its all the way installed, the bottom drives the oil pump, without oil pump=boom

You have to look down into the dizzy hole and move the oil pump drive to line up the bottom of the dizzy with it, use a long screwdriver to turn the oil pump drive

Get the $25 model. It will have instructions on it's use. It will have leads for the battery and one to clamp around the #1 plug wire. There are timing marks on the crankshaft pully and a timing scale on the motor cover. Clean both off good, you will be able to see them when the light strobes as you point it them while the engine is running. Skill level: Moderate :)
