so here's the situation: I have been presented with the chance to buy back my old 4runner that i had in high school and part of college. If I go this route, it means selling my beater xj, as well as possibly the nice dd too.
Since it's been a while since I had it, i don't remember too much about specifics and limitations the stock drivetrain can take.

So here's what I remember about it, and i'm assuming that the guy who bought it from me hasn't changed much.

86 4runner, 22re, 5speed, pretty sure it had stock 4.10 gears, and believe it now is up to 107,000 miles
IFS front, 3" body lift and 31" tires. I can swear that I heard somewhere when I used to own it when i was younger that the yota IFS was strong, and that It could take being locked with 33's with mainly mud and sand use
that true? don't go telling me to instantly do a SAS, because that's not gonna happen anytime soon, don't have the time or money. What it will be used for would be dd, weekend wheeler....cruise the beach, hit the local mud, and a few trips to uwharrie.

If i remember correctly, it's got torsion bars up front right? Could i crank them for about an inch of lift and then put a 1" shackle or block on the rear for just a tad bit lift?
Ill run 31" all terrains on the street and 32" ssr's for off road

will this be alright? what's some weak points I should look to address?
also, i heard of a way to modify the lower A-arms so that you can get out a cv shaft and replace it if it breaks on the trail, anybody know anything about that?

That truck is as tough as wood-pecker lips. You can run it all day long with 31's locked and beat the HELL out of the stock drive line and be fine locked or unlocked in the front. You can lock the front and turn 33's, but it would be good to not try the red, blue, or black trails at Crozet. Can you run these trails, YES....... You just have to learn your rig and know it's capabilities. The Toyota drive line is tough, but I would have an extra CV just in case.

The T-case, Transmission, and rear axle will take what ever you put it through. Your CV's are the weak point at this time. I wouldn't lock it in the front if Uwharrie, beach and mud was all that you are going to do. The rig will do all of Uwharrie with open and open diffs. and you can BEAT IT LIKE A RED HEADED STEP CHILD! Lock the rear, BEAT IT and forget about it.

keep your cherokee and stay away from all that headache called ifs. Sounds like for your situation a cherokee beater will serve you much better. (31-32's)

So it looks like i'm going to try to do this, put my jeep up for sale. i'm getting a 4runner, it's been a few years, what's a good forum for toyota only? I know there's jeep forum for jeeps, what's a good one for toyota 4x4's?

stay out of the mud....unless your name is Ricky
